Amtrak Long Distance Routes: An Endangered Species

Amtrak’s long distance routes are an endangered species and this may be the last chance to travel. The Bush Administration has zeroed-out the budget and the Senate is supporting this decision. The White House is seeking to force Amtrak into bankruptcy and restructuring. The ultimate result would the elimination of under utilized and unprofitable routes. This would likely be many, if not all, of the long distance routes, such as The Empire Builder, California Zephyr, The Adirondack, The Southwest Chief and others.
