Highlights of your visit to this must-attend annual event include the GMC Rangeland Derby and Grandstand shows, the Western Oasis, Indian Village, and the Bell Midway Circus among hundreds of other events and activities. Day 1 - Depart Chicago aboard the iconic Empire Builder
Arrive at Chicago's historic Union Station early this afternoon, where you'll meet your tour manager and fellow travelers. Board Amtrak's Empire Builder train and prepare for a 2:15 pm departure. As the train begins the 1,475-mile journey to Shelby, Montana, acquaint yourself with the Empire Builder and its many features including the glass-walled Sightseer Lounge offering spectacular views of the passing scenery. Day 2 -Shelby, Montana to Lethbridge, Alberta
Spend the day aboard the train getting to know your fellow travelers as you travel across the flatlands of North Dakota into Montana's Big Sky Country. The Empire Builder is scheduled to arrive in Shelby at 5:22 pm, where our deluxe motorcoachwill be waiting to take us across the Canadian border and into the province of Alberta. Day 3 - Banff
After breakfast we board our motorcoach and travel northwest to Banff. En route we stop at Head-Smashed-in-Buffalo-Jump, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that commemorates the customs of native people of the North American plains that date back nearly 6000 years. We continue our journey with the majestic Canadian Rockies dominating the horizon. Upon arrival in Banff, embark on a sightseeing tour of this breathtaking resort town. A highlight of the day's sightseeing excursion will be a ride aboard the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain for spectacular panoramic views of the mountains, lakes, and river valleys. Day 4 - Excursion to the Columbia Icefield and Lake Louise
Today's sightseeing excursion begins with a drive along the Icefields Parkway, North America's most scenic highway, for a visit to the Columbia Icefield, where we'll ride out onto the middle of the Athabasca Glacier in a specialized Ice Explorer for a glacial adventure. Next, visit beautiful Lake Louise and its famous Chateau. The setting is one of the most picturesque in the Rockies!Overnight Banff. (B, L)
Day 5 - Calgary Stampede and Chuckwagon Races
The morning is free to relax, shop or continue to explore all that Banff has to offer. This afternoon, transfer by motorcoach to Calgary for the annual Calgary Stampede. We'll check in to our hotel before heading to the GMC Rangeland Derby and Transalta Grandstand show. The Derby is the world's premier chuckwagon racing event complete with 36 drivers, 288 horses and their teams of outriders vying for over one million dollars in prize money. This is the Stampede's most renowned event! See the Grandstand show plus fireworks and performing black stallions. Overnight Calgary. (B, D)
Day 6 - The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth
The entire day is at your leisure to enjoy all that this major world event has to offer. Discover interesting displays, attractions and events including the Art and Lifestyle Showcase, nonstop entertainment on the Window of the West Stage, creative arts and crafts and more! Don't miss the Co-Op Kitchen Theater, where some of the world's top entertainers will perform. Overnight Calgary.
Day 7 - Stampede Rodeo
The morning is at leisure to continue to explore the Stampede attractions. This afternoon we'll conclude our Stampede visit by experiencing the thrill of one of the world's all-time greatest rodeos. Six major events-Bareback, Bull Riding, Barrel Racing, Saddle Bronc, Steer Wrestling and Tie-Down Roping-are the backbone of the Stampede Rodeo. This evening we'll travel back to Lethbridge by motorcoach. Overnight Lethbridge.
Day 8 - Empire Builder to Chicago
After breakfast this morning, we'll travel by motorcoach across the border to Shelby, Montana, where we will board Amtrak's iconic Empire Builder for the train journey east to Chicago. Once we're settled aboard the train, you'll want to visit the Sightseer Lounge for expansive views of the passing scenery. Overnight train. (CB, L, D)
Day 9 - Arrival in Chicago
When you awake this morning the Empire Builder will be departing Minneapolis, continuing its journey south along the west bank of the Mississippi River. The train is scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 3:55 pm, where your Calgary Stampede and the Rockies adventure comes to an end. (B, L)
Train and Hotel Accommodations
Hotels include the Hampton Inn & Suites (Lethbridge) and Banff International Hotel.
Amtrak accommodations are available in Coach class, Roomette and Bedroom. Coach accommodations include a reclining seat with leg rest. Roomette accommodations include a private cabin that features two comfortable seats beside a picture window during the day, which converts to an upper and lower berth at night. Bedroom accommodations feature a sofa and chair by day and upper and lower berth by night. Bedroom accommodations also include a sink and self-enclosed toilet and shower. All train accommodations include all meals aboard the train and access to the Sightseer Lounge car.
