It was a bit similar to a cruise in that there was an activity director who did things like a wine and beer tastings and talked about the Canadian countryside as we passed by. The sleeping cars are "cozy" like on a cruise, but there were several other cars to relax in, play games or have a drink so you don't stay in your cabin much and the meals were gourmet! We would definitely recommend.

Rail travel can be undependable, as was proven with our trip. Consequently, a highly dependable, always available and proactive travel agent is a necessity. Vacation by Rail was not. When forest fires canceled the Vancouver to Banff segment of our rail trip, we heard nothing from VBR. We ended up calling the 24-hour emergency hotline and were told that, because we were calling on a weekend, nobody from VBR operations would be able to assist us until Monday morning. We purchased $1000 worth of airline tickets to return to Toronto based upon incorrect information given to us by VBR that we ended up not using. We ultimately worked directly with Rocky Mountainer, the rail provider that VBR had contracted with, to get information, options, answers and ultimately a plan to save our trip. Throughout this segment, VBR was no help. It was apparent that VBR did not know what was going on and was therefore of no use. VBR did perform when the Jasper to Edmonton rail leg of the trek was cancelled. This time, VBR did inform us of the cancellation and the person who answered our call to the 24-hour hotline took the initiative to make arrangements to get us to the Edmonton train station from Jasper. Her efforts were deeply appreciated and quite frankly, saved the vacation for us. The VIA Rail segment to Toronto from Edmonton was an excellent experience. The dining was outstanding, service was splendid and the adventure of travel by rail in a sleeper car across Canada is one we are very glad to have experienced. The Fairmont hotels along the way were exceptional and a highlight of the trip. Rocky Mountaineer did the best that they could under difficult circumstances. The VIA rail line delivered the wonderful experience that we were expecting. However, Vacations by Rail failed to deliver when we needed them most.
