The very mention of luxury rail calls to mind the golden era of rail travel, when travel by train wasn’t so much about getting to a destination, it was the destination: a hotel on wheels transporting you through ever-changing scenery, through lush countryside and bustling cities, across borders to a foreign land. And while the train steamed ahead, an intimate group of passengers gathered together to revel in the excitement of train travel aboard vintage rolling stock, slumbering in refined accommodations, their needs tended to by attentive cabin stewards.

During the early 1900’s, travel by train may have been borne out of necessity, but it was undertaken with an enthusiasm and grace that is rarely seen today. The days of old can be relived once again thanks to opulent rail journeys that transport guests to a time when travel by train was refined, utterly civilized, and extraordinarily luxurious.

Luxury rail journeys in Europe incorporate vintage train cars, legendary scenic rail routes, first class accommodations and services aboard the train, and unique sightseeing to create the perfect journey that blends the comforts of today with an atmosphere that hearkens back to a bygone era.

Taxes
Value Added Tax (VAT) is an estimated market value tax applied to goods and services in Europe. VAT rates differ by country but range between 7.6% and 25.5%.

Tipping
How much to tip and for what service varies by country. For instance, in the UK it is expected that travelers tip taxi and coach drivers as well as for service in a restaurant (but not pubs), whereas in Italy tipping in restaurants is not expected and is generally only done when service is exceptional. In such cases, the tip is generally 10%. For transportation, taxi drivers are usually tipped €1-€2 when they have proved of great assistance. In Turkey, tipping in restaurants is generally 5-10% of the price paid. Rather than tip for taxi service, travelers are encouraged to round up to the nearest lira and pay that price. A local tourist office can provide similar information about country-specific customs and protocol.
