Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on its east, Canada to the north, and New York to the west, the northeastern corner of the United States that comprises the New England region is a showcase for rolling hills, rugged mountains, and jagged coastline dotted with lakes and sandy beaches. Further inland are the Appalachian Mountains, and among them, in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, is the tallest peak in the northeast, at 6,289 feet, Mt. Washington.

While the region is recognized for many historical and cultural accomplishments, it is best known for the radiant yellow, red, and orange leaves on display each autumn. “Leaf peepers” converge on the region each year during the short window in late-September to mid-October when the leaves are at their peak.

Truly, the only thing more brilliant than the fall colors is pairing historical sightseeing and scenic railroads with these dazzling displays of nature.
