CHICAGO – April 21, 2014 – From the shores of Cape Cod to the hush of California’s Redwood Forests, Vacations By Rail®, the most comprehensive rail provider in the United States, is offering new rail-drive journeys to help travelers discover the beauty and majesty of the U.S. this summer. Five new itineraries highlighting New England, the Southwest, California and Pacific Northwest give travelers the opportunity to experience the U.S. from coast to coast. Travelers who book a new rail-drive vacation between today and May 16 for travel in 2014 will receive a complimentary $50 gas card.
“The California Zephyr & Yellowstone rail-drive vacation is among Vacations By Rail’s most popular itineraries and as a result, we are expanding our rail-drive offering with five new U.S. options this year,” said Todd Powell, co-founder and president of Vacations By Rail. “A rail-drive vacation allows travelers to relax and take in the beauty of an iconic rail route with the flexibility to visit smaller towns and scenic sites by car at your own pace. Many of these rail routes and destinations are on travelers’ bucket lists and a rail-drive vacation enables you to check-off more than one experience on a single trip.”
New offerings include:
Cape Cod, Boston and Newport: See some of the prettiest parts of New England by rail and car. Travel by train east from Denver and Chicago and watch as the sights change from Midwest prairies to lakeside towns and east coast metropolises. Arrive in Boston where you have two days to see the historic sites such as Paul Revere’s house, the Freedom Trail, or historic Harvard University. Next, drive to Newport where you can explore two of the town’s famous mansions, stroll along the Cliff Walk, and enjoy what is considered “America’s First Resort” town. The last leg of your journey takes you to Cape Cod, known for its beautiful beaches and historic lighthouses. You have two full days to relax on the beach before returning to Boston.
Enchanting Southwest: The colorful southwest is the backdrop for this eight-day rail-drive vacation. Explore historic Albuquerque with the Sandia Mountains looming along the eastern side of the city and the Rio Grande River flowing through it. Visit the western town of Durango in southern Colorado. And experience the culture of the capital of New Mexico, Santa Fe, built in 1610 and still brimming with Old World charm.
Redwoods Wine Country and Yosemite: Travelers will discover breathtaking scenery by train and can leisurely explore the region by car. Highlights include a city stay in San Francisco with a bay cruise; a two-night stay in Yosemite National Park with its Giant Sequoias and breathtaking waterfalls; a drive to Napa to visit local vineyards; and, Redwood National Park, which protects tens of thousands of old-growth Redwood forests.
California Coast Rail and Drive: Travelers visit four of the Golden State’s amazing destinations—San Francisco, Monterey, San Simeon, and Santa Barbara—on a well-planned rail-drive vacation that showcases the beauty of the western U.S. and the dazzling Pacific Coast by both train and car.
Treasures of the Pacific Northwest: Travelers can explore the best of the Pacific Northwest on a rail-drive vacation to must-see destinations throughout Washington and Oregon. Beginning in Chicago or Los Angeles, board one of the USA’s legendary long-distance trains for the overnight journey to Seattle. Upon arrival, travelers explore the city at leisure, visiting popular sights and attractions such as Seattle’s famous Space Needle. Travelers then hit the road exploring Washington and Oregon via rental car. The itinerary includes visits to Olympic National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the Hoh Rainforest; the villages of Seaside and Coos Bay; Portland, famous for the International Rose Test Garden and hundreds of parks, good restaurants, trendy coffee shops, local breweries and distilleries; Mount St. Helens with its miles of hiking trails; and, Mount Rainier National Park. Travelers set their own pace and are able to stop between destinations to enjoy fantastic ocean views, wind-sculpted sand dunes and the pleasures of local farmers’ markets and neighborhood shops.
All rail-drive vacations include train travel along iconic train routes. Vacations By Rail can arrange for connecting rail from a traveler’s nearest Amtrak station or any point along the route for many USA vacations. In addition, all packages include a mid-size car rental, hotel accommodations and select sightseeing.
