Day 1 - Rail to San Francisco
Board your Amtrak train for the overnight journey to San Francisco. While you travel along a legendary route, take time to explore the train. Visit the Dining car for a hot meal or meet fellow travelers from around the world in the Sightseer Lounge car as you travel further into unspoiled natural beauty. Overnight train.
Day 2 - Arrive in San Francisco
When you awake this morning, your train is pproaching the City by the Bay. Travelers departing from Los Angeles board a northbound train this morning for the full-day journey to San Francisco. Arrive in San Francisco and pick up your rental car. Begin exploring the city and its surrounding area or proceed to your hotel. Overnight San Francisco.
Day 3 - San Francisco
Today brings a full day to explore this vibrant city. You may want to take a sightseeing tour by trolley or rent a bicycle and explore on your own. Included in your vacation is a cruise on San Francisco Bay. See the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge, notorious Alcatraz Island, and incredible views along the way. Your Local Host will have suggestions for additional sightseeing, dining, and shopping. Overnight San Francisco.
Day 4 - San Francisco / Yosemite National Park
Spend some time discovering San Francisco this morning or start the journey to Yosemite National Park. Before arriving in Yosemite, you may want to stop in Sonora and visit Columbia State Historic Park, where you can experience the bygone area of the California Gold Rush. Arrive in Yosemite National Park, home to spectacular granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, and Giant Sequoia groves. Trip mileage today: approximately 188 miles. Day 5 - Yosemite National Park
Yosemite is full of opportunity! Hike through the park or explore by bike, spend time with a park ranger to learn about Yosemite, or get a broad overview on a tram tour. During the summer months, you can even help Yosemite by volunteering for a few hours. Overnight Yosemite National Park.
Day 6 - Yosemite National Park / Napa Area
Drive to California's wine country today. You may want to stop in the state capital, where you can get a taste of the Old West in Old Sacramento, complete with cobblestone streets flanked with wide wooden sidewalks. Trip mileage today: approximately 194 miles. Overnight Napa.
Day 7 - Napa Area
Enjoy an entire day to discover this wonderful region. You may want to visit some of the local vineyards and discover a new favorite wine, take an excursion on the Napa Valley Wine Train, play a round of golf, or treat yourself to a relaxing spa treatment. In the evening, why not enjoy one of the area's gourmet restaurants? Overnight Napa.
Day 8 - Napa Area / Eureka/Redwood National Park
Drive to the coast and take scenic Highway 1 north. Pass beautiful beaches, charming coastal communities, and scenic ocean views en route to Eureka. Trip mileage today: approximately 258 miles. Overnight Eureka.
Day 9 - Redwood National Park
You have a full day at leisure to explore Redwood National Park. Overnight Eureka.
Day 10 - Eureka/Redwood National Park / San Francisco
Retrace your steps along the coast or travel inland. Before arriving back in San Francisco, you may want to stop in the picturesque waterfront community of Sausalito, world-renowned for its Mediterranean flair and breathtaking views. Trip mileage today: approximately 272 miles.
Day 11 - San Francisco
Your vacation comes to an end today. Return your rental car prior to departing for home.
Train and Hotel Accommodations
Hotels include the Omni San Francisco, The Pines Resort (Yosemite), Napa Valley Marriott Hotel & Spa, and Red Lion Eureka.
Amtrak accommodations are available in Coach class, Roomette and Bedroom. Coach accommodations include a reclining seat with leg rest. Roomette accommodations include a private cabin that features two comfortable seats beside a picture window during the day, which converts to an upper and lower berth at night. Bedroom accommodations feature a sofa and chair by day and upper and lower berth by night. Bedroom accommodations also include a sink and self-enclosed toilet and shower.
