Day 4 - St. Louis Sightseeing / American Queen Departure
The morning is yours to sleep in or explore St. Louis on your own. This afternoon we depart on a city sightseeing tour led by noted historian Nini Harris. Highlights include Forest Park, the lovely Cathedral and the Euclid District. Later today, we board the steamboat American Queen, docked right under the Arch. At 7:30 pm, the calliope plays, the big red paddlewheel turns and the steamboat begins its voyage of discovery. Overnight onboard vessel. (D)
Day 5 - On the River
Today brings an entire day of steamboating, which gives you plenty of time to explore the ship. Enjoy lunch on the deck as you float past incredible scenery or relax with a cool libation in the Calliope Bar as the American Queen makes its way down the Mississippi River toward the junction where it meets the Ohio River. As the calliope plays, entire towns turn out along the riverbanks to see this legendary steamboat. This evening is the ship's welcome cocktail party as we steam down the mighty Mississippi. Overnight onboard vessel. (B, L, D)
Day 6 - Cave-in-Rock
Today finds us in southern Illinois at Cave-in-Rock. Sitting atop high bluffs overlooking the scenic Ohio River, the heavily wooded park is named for the 55-foot wide cave that was carved out of the limestone rock by water thousands of years ago. Trails winding along the riverbank offer views of riverboats, barges and other tranquil river scenes. Overnight onboard vessel. (B, L, D)
Day 7 - Henderson
Quaint Henderson, KY, a city dating back to 1784 and the home of naturalist John Audubon, greets us this morning. Keep an eye out for Audubon's famous bird paintings, which seem to be around every corner. See if you can find all eight of the town's bronze bird statues. Tonight is the Captain's special Welcome Dinner followed by jazz in the Engine Room Bar. Overnight onboard vessel. (B, L, D)
Day 8 - On the River
Another full day of steamboating along the Ohio River awaits you. It's a great day to sleep in, attend a lecture by a Riverlorian or sip mint juleps at the "top of the boat" Calliope Bar. Today is also the ship's Southern Picnic, an onboard feast complete with platters of fried chicken, baked ham, gumbo, mud pie and other southern specialties. Overnight onboard vessel. (B, L, D)
Day 9 - Brandenburg
Today we visit Brandenburg, the historic area that hosted General John Hunt Morgan and his troops as they crossed the Ohio River into Indiana in 1863. The home where Morgan watched the troop crossing stands proudly overlooking the Ohio River. Although it was almost completely destroyed by the 1974 tornado that devastated Meade County, it was rebuilt to its original state and is now a private home. Overnight onboard vessel. (B, L, D)
Day 10 - Louisville
The American Queen ties up in Louisville this morning, where your relaxing taste of rail-cruise Americana comes to a close. (B)
