The Columbia River Gorge

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho with its great shimmering lake is, without a doubt, one of the prettiest places in North, famed for its rugged natural beauty, ideal weather or relaxed Western charm. Few places are as popular or acclaimed in terms of scenery and glorious vistas. And, we know of no finer way to get to Coeur d'Alene than by riverboat from Portland, on the Columbia, Snake & Willamette Rivers, in the wake of Lewis & Clark.

On board, you will cruise through rugged canyons, lush forests, tribal lands and pass through massive locks and dams. Not only is the scenery awe-inspiring (including famed Bonneville Dam, which you will 'lock' through) but during our voyage east into Idaho, we will visit Columbia Gorge National Park and historic Pendleton, Oregon and as befits a scenic holiday, all shore excursions are included. Our guests also enjoy the exciting Jetboat ride on the Snake River through Hells Canyon, an exhilarating journey through North America's deepest Canyon.

Of course, not all of the splendor is outdoors since our riverboat, the Columbia Queen is a jewel, complete with rich furnishings and carrying only 150 guests in a casual, relaxed setting. Cabins are large and wonderfully appointed (with original artwork and yes, Pendleton blankets), all meals are included and service is superb, from a welcoming all-American crew. In an age of mass-market cruise ships carrying 4000 passengers, this is a marvelous and relaxing way to see the stunning vistas of the American West, up close and in great comfort.

Upon arrival in Idaho, a short ride brings us to the ultra-luxury Coeur d'Alene Resort and Spa, right on the Lake where five-diamond rated comfort awaits for two nights along with plenty of free time for exploring this charming resort town. After two-nights in Coeur d'Alene, for a last lovely journey, guests board the Empire Builder train for the overnight passage to Seattle (or Portland) over the Burlington Northern Railroad.

Day 1 - Portland
Portland, Oregon, makes a strong argument that, indeed, location is everything. Perched at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers, about 100 miles from the Pacific Ocean, the "City of Roses" is a commercial and cultural hub. In the golden age of riverboats, its waterfront was thick with sternwheeler traffic and the sounds of steam whistles and calliopes floated across the water. Today, you'll see barges, freighters, tugs and a gleaming cityscape.

Day 2 - Columbia River Gorge
This morning we enter the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and experience nature's cathedral. Enjoy the view of the 620 foot Multnomah Falls, Beacon Rock, Rooster Rock, Crown Point, the Bridge of the Gods, Maryhill, and Stonehenge with each having a story of their own to tell. Around noon we will dock along the Columbia Gorge at Stevenson Landing at the Port of Skamania County. The Columbia Gorge was created with the melting of the Ice Age Glaciers and the release of thousands of square miles of deep water that poured through this area in a matter of a few days carving out deep canyons as the water rushed through on its journey to the ocean.

Day 3 - Pendleton
Discover Pendleton's Wild West past in its underground tunnels, dug by the Chinese between 1870 and 1930. The tunnels connected businesses from Chinese laundries to illegal saloons, bordellos and opium dens. The Pendleton Woolen Mills opened in 1909 to weave blankets for the Indians and still produces them today, along with other items. Learn about the history of the Umatilla, Cayuse and Walla Walla Indians through impressive exhibits and dioramas as well as a festive native dance program at the Tamastslikt Cultural Center.

Day 4 - Clarkston
In Clarkston, the Hells Canyon jet boat ride offers covered, all-inside seating for a safe, comfortable and thoroughly exhilarating journey through North America's deepest canyon. Keep your eyes peeled for elk, bighorn sheep and 7,000-year-old Indian petroglyphs.- a short scenic drive brings us to Coeur d'Alene Resort to begin our two-night stay in this acclaimed resort. B

Day 5 - Coeur d'Alene Resort
The Coeur d'Alene Resort brings five-star luxury to the edge of one of America's most beautiful lakefront communities. With a Gold Medal golf course, a European spa and six restaurants to choose from, The Resort is the perfect place to get away from the world. And when you feel like stepping out, The Resort is right in the heart of downtown Coeur d'Alene's thriving shopping and outdoor recreation. We have all day at leisure to enjoy this magical setting. B D

Day 6 - Spokane
After lunch, a short drive to nearby Spokane where we have the afternoon free to explore this lovely city. Guests departing for the West Coast tonight aboard the Empire Builder train enjoy, with our compliments, a day room at the hotel to relax in until the midnight departure, a nice touch. Guests flying out tomorrow morning stay overnight at the well-located Doubletree Hotel.

Day 7 - Going Home
Guests aboard the Empire Builder train arrive in Seattle (or Portland) this morning. Guests flying home depart Spokane for their home city.
