Day 1 - Chicago to Glacier National Park
Guests leave Chicago bound for Glacier National Park, Montana aboard the Empire Builder train. Guests living in the West depart Portland, Oregon, or Seattle, Washington, this afternoon for Glacier Park aboard the eastbound Empire Builder. For either departure point, it is an overnight trip to Glacier Park.
Day 2 - Glacier National Park
Arrive in Glacier National Park aboard the Empire Builder! The train stops right at our hotel, the historic Glacier Park Lodge, built by the Great Northern Railroad and the largest log building in the World. Overnight at Glacier Park Lodge.
Day 3 - Glacier National Park
A day of breathtaking scenery as you traverse the fabled 'Going to the Sun' Highway over the Continental Divide by red open-air ‘jammer' bus, a stunning day. Later tonight, a welcome reception at the Glacier Park Lodge and a nice way to meet your fellow travelers. R
Day 4 - Glacier National Park
Today you travel to seldom visited Two Medicine Valley and Two Medicine Lake, Looking Glas Hill, Many Glacier and St Marys Valley and Wild Goose Island, a visual treat, places most visitors to Glacier National Park never see. The afternoon is at leisure with a final night to enjoy the charm of Glacier Park Lodge. L
Day 5 - Glacier National Park
Today you will travel through fir and aspen forests into Two Medicine Valley with a short walking trail (optional) to Running Eagle Falls. Continue on to Middle Two Medicine Lake and the famous Great Northern Chalet camp store in this undiscovered valley. From there you travel one of the oldest roads in the world, The Old North Trail, over scenic Looking Glass Hill and then down to Kiowa Junction onto the vast Montana prairies. As you venture through the Blackfeet Nation and into Browning you will visit the Blackfeet Heritage Center and Art Gallery, Museum of the Plains Indians before traveling west to shimmering Lake McDonald. You'll stay the night in this lovely setting, most people's favorite of all Glacier Park sights. Overnight Lake McDonald Lodge. B
Day 6 - Glacier National Park to Seattle
A final free day to enjoy this idyllic setting in Glacier National Park. A sightseeing cruise on Lake McDonald is included. In the evening board Amtrak's Empire Builder train bound for Seattle.
Day 7 - Seattle Arrival
You arrive in Seattle after breakfast and transfer to the superbly located Roosevelt Hotel to begin our two-day visit to the Emerald City. Acclaimed Pikes Market, the Monorail and the flagship Nordstrom store are right nearby and tonight is the welcome to Seattle dinner at renowned Ivar's. Overnight at the Roosevelt Hotel. D
Day 8 - Seattle
All day free to enjoy Seattle and there is even time to do a full day in Victoria, British Columbia today by ferry from Seattle with seven full hours in this lovely bit of Britain. Overnight at the Roosevelt Hotel. B
Day 9 - Columbia River Cruise - Seattle to Portland
In late morning you will board the sleek Talgo train for the scenic ride south to Portland along the Puget Sound where you board the cute Columbia Queen, a wonderfully intimate riverboat carrying only 150 lucky passengers in great comfort, richly appointed public areas and superb cabins. At 7 pm, we set sail, in the wake of Lewis & Clark. B
Day 10 - Columbia River Cruise - Columbia River Gorge
Today enter the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic area and experience nature’s cathedral. Multnomah Falls, Beacon Rock, Rooster Rock, Crown Point, the Bridge of the Gods, Maryhill, Stonehenge - each has a story to tell.
Day 11 - Columbia River Cruise - Pendleton
Discover Pendleton's Wild West past in its underground tunnels, dug by the Chinese between 1870 and 1930. The tunnels connected businesses from Chinese laundries to illegal saloons, bordellos and opium dens. The Pendleton Woolen Mills opened in 1909 to weave blankets for the Indians and still produces them today. Learn about the history of the Umatilla, Cayuse and Walla Walla Indians through impressive exhibits and dioramas as well as a dance program at the Tamastslikt Cultural Center.
Day 12 - Columbia River Cruise - Clarkston
In Clarkston, the Hells Canyon jet boat ride offers covered, all inside seating for a safe, comfortable and thoroughly exhilarating journey through North America's deepest canyon. Keep your eyes peeled for elk, bighorn sheep and 7,000- year-old Indian petroglyphs.
Day 13 - Columbia River Cruise
All day cruising the majestic Columbia River.
Day 14 - Columbia River Cruise
At the Mount St. Helens Monument Center in Longview, see the aftermath of the 5.1 magnitude 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens—an explosion that leveled 230 square miles of mature forest and removed 1,300 feet from the top of the mountain.
Day 15 - Columbia River Cruise
In 1811, five years after the departure of Lewis & Clark, financier John Jacob Astor sent delegates of his Pacific Fur Company to the area to establish a trading post. They built Fort Astoria (the site of which is marked by a monument in town today) and a town grew up in the shadow--the first permanent U.S. settlement on the Pacific Coast.
Day 16 - Portland
Columbia Queen docks in Portland after breakfast and guests depart for home by train or plane.
