Over the next 12 days, experience unimaginable sights aboard a luxury cruise liner and spend time in some of the world’s most beloved destinations: London and Paris. Enhancing the tour even further are the sights, scents and sounds of Christmas, as this journey takes place during the most wonderful time of the year. The tour sets sail in Basel and follows the twists and turns of the Rhine, making stops in Breisach, Strasbourg, Heidelberg, Rüdesheim and Cologne before docking in Amsterdam. From Amsterdam, travel by high-speed train to Paris and London for even more sightseeing before the tour comes to a close. Complete with enchanting excursions and all of the splendor that accompanies the holidays in Europe, your time on the Rhine is sure to be memorable.

Day 1 - Travel to Basel
Make your way to Basel, Switzerland via your preferred international airline (International flight is not included in tour price).
Day 2 - Basel
Arrive in Basel, Switzerland today, and spend some time enjoying the festive sights of the city before boarding your Avalon cruise ship by 5 p.m. On board, settle into your accommodations and enjoy a welcome dinner as the ship sets sail for Breisach. Overnight ship. (D)
Day 3 - Breisach
This morning, the ship docks in Breisach and your choice of adventures lies ahead for the day. The first choice takes you to Colmar, the gateway to the Black Forest and a city with roots dating back to Medieval times. Embark on a guided tour of the ancient city featuring half-timbered buildings before soaking in the ambiance of Colmar’s traditional Christmas market. Option number two immerses you in all the magic of the Black Forest. A full-day tour takes you to some of the most beautiful locales and allows you to participate in the local holiday traditions. Following your excursion, enjoy some free time to explore the shops, galleries and cafes of Breisach. Overnight ship. (B, L, D)
Day 4 - Strasbourg
As you wake, your luxury cruise liner arrives at your next port of call, Strasbourg. After breakfast, disembark the ship and set out for the day’s adventure: a guided tour of the city. The tour features some of Strasbourg’s most wonderful sites, including the Strasbourg Cathedral, which has been named as one of the most beautiful cathedrals in all of Europe. The tour makes a stop in La Petite France, an ultra-romantic district featuring half-timbered houses dating back centuries, cobbled streets, winding canals and picturesque vistas. After, spend some time soaking in the festive ambiance of Strasbourg’s winter markets. Overnight ship. (B, L, D)
Day 5 - Heidelberg/Mainz
Today’s port of call is Heidelberg, known all around the world for its beauty. The day begins with a guided tour of the incredible Heidelberg Castle. See the ruins dating back to the 1300s, as well as several other buildings that surround an inner courtyard. Soak in the amazing views from the terrace and the gardens, and observe the “Great Vat.” After touring the castle, take on the sites of the city on a guided tour. One of the most fascinating stops the tour makes is at the Gutenberg Museum, where you can discover the history of printing. Heidelberg also features a beautiful Christmas market, where you have time to taste the festive offerings and shop the stalls. Overnight ship. (B, L, D)
Day 6 - Rüdesheim/Rhine Gorge Cruise/Koblenz
Enjoy a look at the beautiful scenery of the Rhine Gorge, as the ship cruises from Mainz to Rüdesheim. See the legendary Rock of the Lorelei and breathtaking scenery around each bend. Upon arrival in Rüdesheim, a true sight to behold lies ahead at Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet Museum. Here, learn about the history of mechanical musical instruments through over 350 displays ranging from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Next, enjoy a tasting of local wine or coffee, depending on your departure date. Reboarding the ship, the cruise continues down the Rhine to Koblenz, where a true winter wonderland awaits your discovery at the local Christmas markets. Overnight ship. (B, L, D)
Day 7 - Cologne
Your cruise ship continues down the river to Cologne overnight, and as the vessel docks this morning, your next destination awaits your exploration. Cologne is the capital city of the Rhineland and as such, is steeped in culture. On today’s walking tour of the city, sites of interest include Cologne’s Old Towne, which dates back over 900 years to the Medieval period, and the gothic cathedral, which is one of the largest in all of Europe. You might catch a whiff of the spiced smells of baked goods and festive drinks as you make your way through town, and it can mean just one thing: Christmas markets. Cologne is home to quite a few, and you have a chance to explore them on your own before boarding the ship and setting out on an overnight cruise to Amsterdam. Overnight ship. (B, L, D)
Day 8 - Amsterdam
See all of Amsterdam’s best sites from the water as you embark on a guided canal cruise this morning. Soak in visions of stately homes and interesting architecture, and learn little-known facts about the city as you cruise through the water. Following, you have the entire day to sightsee through Amsterdam. Perhaps take some time to meander through the local Christmas markets, or set out to see the windmills this city is famous for. The Anne Frank House is a treasured destination in Amsterdam, as are the many fascinating museums. With interesting neighborhoods, a large outdoor ice rink and plenty of shops and galleries to explore, Amsterdam impresses on every level. Overnight ship. (B, L, D)
Day 9 - En Route to Paris
Disembark your cruise ship this morning, and head for Amsterdam’s train station to board a high-speed train bound for Paris. Enjoy the changing scenery as you move in and out of cities, through the countryside and south through the Netherlands, Belgium and France before arriving in Paris. Upon arrival, make your way to your hotel, which is conveniently located right next to the Eiffel Tower. The remainder of the day is yours to get acquainted with the City of Love. Overnight Paris. Day 10 - Paris
Immerse yourself in all the glory of Paris today, as you take on the sites in two wonderful ways. First, set out on a guided driving tour of the city, which highlights sites such as the Arc de Triomphe, the Latin Quarter and the Place de la Concorde. The tour stops at one of the best lookouts in the city where unparalleled views of the Eiffel Tower make for a photographer’s dream. As the tour wraps up, head to the Seine River for a relaxing river cruise. Marvel over sites such as the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre and more. Enjoy your evening at leisure - maybe at one of Paris’ amazing restaurants. Overnight Paris. (B)
Day 11 - Eurostar to London
Savor a croissant or other traditional French breakfast fare at your hotel this morning before making your way to Paris’ Gare du Nord. Your Eurostar train awaits for today’s journey through the Channel Tunnel to London. Upon arrival in London, travel to your centrally located hotel, which is within walking distance of some of the city’s best sites and overlooks the River Thames. Begin your explorations or simply relax in your room for the evening. Overnight London. (B)
Day 12 - London
Take on all of London’s best landmarks on a guided tour of the city. The tour bus takes you past destinations such as Westminster Abbey, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace and many other beloved sites. The tour wraps up as you arrive at St. Paul’s Cathedral, an icon of the London skyline and a place where great history meets amazing architecture. Spend the remainder of the day revisiting favorite sites from the tour or exploring new destinations. Overnight London. (B)
Day 13 - London
As you wake this morning, enjoy one last breakfast at your hotel. Your festive holiday adventure comes to a close as you depart for your return flight home. (B)
