Whether you crave the unexplainable draw of a historic city or the tranquility of the countryside, prepare to be blown away by the offerings of this 12-day rail tour. Boston serves as the starting point for this journey and from here, we continue to Bretton Woods in New Hampshire, the Charlevoix Countryside and Quebec City in Quebec Province, and Bar Harbor and Ogunquit in Maine. Each destination brings its own unique offerings, including national parks, landmark sites, guided tours and heritage railway journeys. In fact, during the course of this trip, we enjoy a total of four rail excursions - Mt. Washington Cog Railway, Conway Scenic Railroad, Orford Express and Train de Charlevoix. Guided tours of sites such as Montmorency Falls, Acadia National Park and Saguenay Fjord National Park enhance this tour, as do the incredible excursions, such as our whale watching tour in Baie-Sainte-Catherine - one of the world’s premier whale watching locales. Day 1 - Boston
Arrive in Boston and transfer to your hotel on your own. Meet your tour manager in the lobby of the hotel, then the evening is yours to explore the incredible culinary scene of Boston. Overnight Boston, MA.
Day 2 - Mt. Washington Cog Railway
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning before we depart by motorcoach bound for the beautiful White Mountains by way of Franconia Notch State Park. On this journey, we learn about the area’s history as we navigate through cities, forests and countryside. Marvel at dramatic peaks of the White Mountains as we drive through the park en route to the base of Mount Washington, where our next adventure awaits - the Mt. Washington Cog Railway. This heritage railway takes us to the highest peak in the Northeast, where panoramic views of New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Southern Canada and the Atlantic Ocean overtake the horizon. The train moves at a leisurely pace, allowing you to take in all the natural glory of the region as you ascend the mountain. At the top, enjoy time to walk around the lookout, explore the hiking trails or peruse the museum and observatory. As we arrive back at the base, we are transferred to our hotel, with the remainder of the day at leisure. Day 3 - Conway Scenic Railroad/Crawford Notch State Park
Today’s scenic excursion takes us into the heart of Crawford Notch State Park. Between the mountains and the lush forests, the views are truly inspiring. We continue on our picturesque route to the charming town of North Conway where we board the Conway Scenic Railroad. A marvel of engineering, the tracks of the Notch Train date back to the 1870s and include dramatic views of ravines, cliffs, mountains, waterways and more. Crossing the Frankenstein Trestle and the Willey Brook Bridge further enhance this memorable journey. History comes to life through stories and commentary by our train host. During the ride, enjoy First Class seating in the CP Reed Car, where snacks and beverages are complimentary. Lunchtime brings yet another unforgettable experience, dining in the elegant Hattie Evans Dining Car. Here, simultaneously savor a delicious 3-course lunch and take in the breathtaking views. As the ride concludes, we return to our hotel and the rest of the day is yours to pamper yourself in the spa, to explore the trails of Bretton Woods or to sightsee through town. Day 4 - Quintessential Vermont/Orford Express Train
Some of the best scenery of New Hampshire and Vermont are on display today as we travel by motorcoach through New England en route to the province of Quebec. The first stop we make on our route is at the Cabot Cheese Factory. Here, enjoy a video tour of the creamery and cheesemaking process, sample freshly made dairy products and purchase some snacks for the road, if you so choose. The journey continues across the Canadian border into the beautiful landscape of the Eastern Townships, where scenic lakes and forested mountains make for picture-perfect views. Our first stop across the border is the Magog Train Station, where we board the Orford Express. Enjoy sights of Lake Memphremagog and views of the serene countryside as you dine on spectacular chef-prepared cuisine. The lunch train ride is complete with local Quebec Entertainment for your viewing pleasure. Back at the station, we continue by motorcoach through the beautiful lakeside community of Magog en route to our hotel at the edge of Mont-Orford National Park. Overnight Magog, QC. (B, L)
Day 5 - Montmorency Falls/Charlevoix Countryside
The pastoral scenes of Quebec’s Eastern Townships lie ahead on this morning’s journey toward Quebec City. The first stop of the day is at one of Quebec’s most beloved natural sites, Montmorency Falls. As we arrive, we embark on a gondola tour that offers unimaginable views, as well as commentary noting the historical and geological aspects of Montmorency Falls. It takes only a few moments to make the climb to the top of the falls by cable car, and once there, the panoramic views can be enjoyed from the lookout, the wooden walkway or the suspension bridge.
Enjoy lunch at Montmorency Manor at the top of the falls before continuing on a scenic route along the St. Lawrence River bound for the Charlevoix Countryside. We drive through local villages, meander over rolling hills and are surrounded by beautiful architecture, ranging from towering chapels to historic buildings. We arrive in La Malbaie and check in to our hotel, which boasts scenic views of the St. Lawrence River and a broad range of onsite amenities, including a casino next door. Overnight La Malbaie, QC. Day 6 - Whale Watching Cruise/Saguenay Fjord National Park
We move from the serenity of the countryside to the beauty of the open water today as we travel along the Charlevoix Scenic Highway to Baie-Sainte-Catherine. Here, we board a 3-level cruising vessel and set out into some of the most beautiful whale watching sites in the world. Enjoy up-close views of whale species, such as minke, beluga and humpback, seabirds and other aquatic creatures during your time on the boat. The tour takes us inside Saguenay Fjords National Park, allowing you to take in the beauty of the staggering stone cliffs and the lush forests against the blue waters. Following our tour, we return to our hotel for a day at leisure. Perhaps hit the links at the onsite golf course or pamper yourself with a day in the spa. There is a variety of excellent restaurants within the hotel, however; venturing into town offers a taste of the farm-fresh gastronomy of Charlevoix. Overnight La Malbaie, QC. (B)
Day 7 - Train de Charlevoix/Baie-Saint Paul/Quebec City
Soak in the views from the hotel’s gardens after breakfast this morning, then transfer to the local train station to board the Train de Charlevoix. Admire the isolated landscapes of the Charlevoix region as the train travels between the mountains and sea en route to Quebec City. Halfway through the journey, we make a stop in Baie-Saint Paul, which is known for its charming shops and thriving art scene. During your time here, meander through the galleries and boutiques and grab lunch at one of the local eateries. Back on the train, settle into your comfortable seat, and watch as the scenes change with each turn as we approach Quebec City. Upon arrival this evening, we transfer to our hotel with the evening at leisure to relax or to get acquainted with this historic city. Overnight Quebec City, QC. (B)
Day 8 - Quebec City Sightseeing
Find yourself lost in the unique ambiance of Quebec City today as we embark on a guided sightseeing tour. We begin with a walk through Old Quebec, which boasts UNESCO World Heritage Site designation and is chock-full of historic buildings, winding cobblestone streets and 17th-century fortifications and continue to popular sites throughout the city, including the Plains of Abraham, Place Royale and the vibrant Latin Quarter, where bakeries, shops, restaurants and Laval University sit side by side. Our knowledgeable tour guide offers interesting anecdotes and facts about the city as we make our way through the sites. As the tour concludes, the remainder of the day is yours to explore the city at your own place. Take in the European ambiance of the city at one of the open-air cafés or revisit your favorite stops from the tour. Of course, Quebec City is chock-full of other sites to discover, as well, including the Museum of Civilization, the Parliament Building, the Aquarium of Quebec and the National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec. Day 9 - Quebec City to Bar Harbor, ME
We depart Quebec City after breakfast this morning and travel along the Old Canadian Scenic Byway across the Canadian-United States border into Maine. Approximately halfway through the journey, we make a stop in an area known as The Forks - called such as it is the meeting point of the Dead and Kennebec Rivers. Lunch is served at Kennebec River Brewery, which is known for its sustainably brewed craft beers. Back on the road, we head to Bar Harbor, the gateway to Acadia National Park. The town offers a fantastic mixture of charm, history and nature. Upon arrival, take the evening at leisure to explore the local dining scene, peruse the shops or to enjoy the coastal scenery. Day 10 - Acadia National Park
Watch as the beauty of Acadia National Park unfolds on today’s guided tour of the park. Enjoy unforgettable views of Mount Desert Island, the smaller surrounding islands and the Schoodic Peninsula. Admire the scenes of mountains colliding with the sea and lush forests dotting the coastline. During our tour, we travel to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the Northern Atlantic Seaboard, to look out over the tops of the forests and across the Atlantic Ocean. As the tour concludes, we transfer back to Bar Harbor with the afternoon at leisure to enjoy the offerings of the coastal community. Perhaps set out on the water by kayak or boat or explore the local art scene. This evening, join your fellow travelers for an authentic lobster bake featuring locally caught lobster. Day 11 - Coastal Drive to Ogunquit, ME
Spend your morning soaking in the enchanting coastal scenes of New England as we drive to Ogunquit, ME. Visions of lush coastal lowlands, waves crashing into the rocky shoreline and quaint seaside towns fill the landscape. Along the way, we stop at the Portland Public Market with time for lunch on your town, shopping and sightseeing. The Public Market is filled with unique small businesses and offers a variety of restaurant choices. After lunch we continue south, arriving in Ogunquit with time for you to introduce yourself to the town. Ogunquit’s beaches are breathtaking, and there are also lighthouses and historic buildings to explore. This evening, reflect on the amazing adventures of this New England journey with your fellow travelers at a local restaurant. Overnight Ogunquit, ME. (B, D)
Day 12 - Tour Conclusion
Your tour of New England and Quebec concludes with a transfer to Logan International Airport for flights departing after 1:30 p.m. or to Boston South Station for departures after 2:00 p.m. (B)

Conway Scenic Notch Train
Operating on tracks that date back to 1870, the Conway Scenic Notch Train travels through some of the most dramatic scenery in the Northeast: bluffs, ravines, lakes, streams and lush forests.
Mt. Washington Cog Railway
In operation for 150 years, the Mt. Washington Cog Railway was the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world. The journey begins at the Marshfield Base Station and takes approximately 1 hour to reach the summit, where amazing views abound. The journeys both up and down the mountain are fully narrated, offering little-known facts and wonderful scenery.
Train de Charlevoix
Meandering along the St. Lawrence River across 125 km, this singular rail cruise between Québec City and La Malbaie reveals all the poetic beauty of seven cliffside and seaside towns and villages. Light refreshments are available for purchase on board, and the Train de Charlevoix showcases and serves a number of local terroir products as well as snacks. An on-board Beverage Menu featuring alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks proposes a selection of fruit juices, pop, beer, wine and cocktails.
