The Danube Express normally comprises eight cars headed by a modern electric locomotive. The cars, all of which are new or refurbished, provide a high level of comfort and convenience, consist of three deluxe sleeping cars, two classic sleeping cars, restaurant car, lounge car and a car for the staff. There are also Presidential Cars which can be included in the consist.

Each sleeping car has a fully dedicated member of staff who will be at your service throughout the journey, in charge of housekeeping and that all-important wake-up call.

We provide all our guests with a full timetable explaining the details of our excursions and the timing of all meals along with other health, safety, weather and travel information.

With its warm and friendly atmosphere, the lounge car is the place to settle in to the unhurried pace of life on board. Wood panelled walls, comfy seating and softly toned décor combine to create an agreeable ambience and an inviting spot to while away time as you unwind after the day’s programme. An ideal rendezvous, the lounge car offers the prospect of relaxed conversation with fellow travellers as you enjoy a drink and watch the ever changing landscape pass by.

In the evening, this social hub comes alive as people meet for pre-dinner drinks and later, the party continues as the resident pianist plays your favourite songs. A member of staff is always on hand to assist and the bar stays open until the early hours.

Soft drinks, house wine and beer are complimentary while spirits, premium wines and champagne are available for purchase should you wish.

One of the highlights of a journey on the Danube Express is the experience, ever rarer in today’s world, of dining well on a train in good company. In the elegant yet unpretentious restaurant cars, the atmosphere is comfortable and informal. The friendly, efficient waiting staff serves all meals in a single sitting, allowing you time to relax, unhurried, to enjoy the sense of occasion.

Tempting dishes and regional specialities with a Central European theme are prepared and cooked by our experienced chefs using fresh local ingredients. Menus are compiled with care to ensure they appeal to all tastes and special dietary needs can also be accommodated.

Breakfasts, cooked to order, also include fruit juice, cereals, rolls and preserves. Delicious lunches and dinners are table d’hôte, accompanied by your choice of house wine, beer or soft drinks with water, tea and coffee also provided.

Providing some of the finest European rail accommodation available today, these newly reconstructed sleeping cars offer every convenience and comfort so passengers can travel in privacy and luxury. Each car has just five spacious yet intimate en suite compartments where passengers can relax and enjoy the scenery as it rolls by.

Careful design and attention to detail have resulted in the perfect combination of modern technology with décor and fixtures that evoke a bygone era when elegance and style were quintessential elements of travel.

Full air-conditioning with individual temperature control ensures total comfort whilst lighting can be varied to suit your mood with personal reading lamps, spotlights and soft, concealed ceiling lights. For your security, each compartment can be locked and a personal safe is also available. In addition, there are power sockets for recharging batteries.

Each compartment is beautifully appointed with wood panelled walls complemented by coordinated fabrics and brass fittings. A full-length mirror and large picture window enhance the spacious feel whilst a second window opens for that perfect picture opportunity or simply some fresh air. Two comfy armchairs provide daytime seating and a freestanding chair gives additional flexibility. Ample storage includes cupboards and a full-length wardrobe.

Your private bathroom features a shower with constant hot water, washbasin and WC as well as a heated towel rail, hair dryer and shaver socket (230v). Fresh white towels and some toiletries are provided too.

Your sleeping car attendant is on hand to bring early morning tea or coffee and perhaps later, a glass of wine. During dinner each evening, he transforms your living space into a cosy bedroom with two comfortable lower beds.

These historic cars date from the 1950s and were once part of the Hungarian government fleet used by officials and visiting dignitaries on state business. Fully refurbished they retain many of their original features including wooden panels and elegant furniture.

Each two-berth compartment provides a private, onboard haven of peace and quiet, with a banquette style sofa and large, opening windows which enable you to make the most of the changing views outside. There is a washbasin and towels and a selection of toiletries are also provided. With a mirror and an electric socket (230v), plus hanging space for clothes and overhead racks to store luggage, you have everything you need. Shower and toilet facilities are available in each car, just a short distance down the corridor.

During dinner, your dedicated sleeping car attendant transforms the compartment from a living room to a cosy bedroom with upper and lower berths for night time use and, in the morning, wakes you with an early morning cup of tea or coffee.

There are a limited number of adjoining two-berth compartments with connecting doors, ideally suited to a group of four friends travelling together – please enquire about availability.

There are two types of Classic sleeping car:

• One is air-conditioned with nine two-berth compartments. With some allocated as singles, average occupancy is usually around 12 persons.
• The other has a lounge area with a table and seating for ten, plus just four two-berth compartments with washbasin and a VIP single with private shower and WC. The latter is perfect for single occupancy with a small table, full length wardrobe and a comfortable sofa converting into a large single bed for night time use.
