What’s included

Itinerary

Day 1 - Beginning your cross-country journey in Chicago

Your vacation begins today in the heart of the Midwest, Chicago. As you arrive today, make your own way to Chicago's historic Union Station, where your Amtrak train awaits. The Empire Builder is one of Amtrak's most iconic trains, traveling from Chicago to Portland and Seattle, stopping en route in East Glacier, the gateway to Glacier National Park in Montana's Big Sky Country.

Step aboard the Empire Builder for your overnight journey into the mountains of the West, settling into your reclining Coach* seat beside a large picture window. As the city's skyline fades into the backdrop, the Empire Builder travels through the grasslands and prairies of the Midwest. Light meals, snacks and beverages are available for purchase, and if tables are available, you can enjoy dinner in the Dining Car. Overnight train.

*Please note: Upgrades to Roomettes and Bedrooms are available by speaking with a Rail Specialist. As Sleeping Car guests, travelers in these accommodations enjoy complimentary meals during their time on the Empire Builder.

Day 2 - Across the North Dakota plains to East Glacier

Waking on the train this morning, look out your window to see passing scenes of North Dakota before traveling over the Gassman Coulee Trestle and crossing into Montana around midday. All service classes on the Empire Builder have access to the Sightseer Lounge, and its panoramic windows provide an incredible vantage point over this remarkable scenery.

The Empire Builder pulls into the East Glacier Station this evening, and you can make your own way to Glacier Park Lodge, which is located just across the street from the station. The charm of this historic lodge is immediately apparent on arrival. Modeled after a Swiss chalet, the hotel also boasts a nine-hole golf course, making it a spectacular retreat. Upon checking in for the night, you are free to unwind while using the lodge's amenities. Overnight Glacier Park Lodge.

Day 3 - Dramatic views from St. Mary’s Lake

Set near the eastern entrance to Going-to-the-Sun Road and close to St. Mary's Lake, St. Mary Village is another iconic lodge near Glacier National Park and your destination today.

After transferring by coach, you can settle in or get a look at St. Mary Village. Hiking trails are easily accessible, and complimentary park shuttles from the St. Mary Visitors Center, located just under a mile from the lodge, make it convenient to explore.

Later in the afternoon, walk to the St. Mary Visitors Center to board the shuttle to Rising Sun Boat Dock. Here, embark on a scenic cruise on St. Mary Lake, relaxing while surrounded by 360-degree views of mountainous grandeur. You may even spot wildlife along the lakeshore before returning to the dock, where you can catch the shuttle back to the St. Mary Visitor Center before continuing your evening at leisure. Overnight St. Mary Village.

Please note: Admission to Glacier National Park is not included with this tour. To enter the park, you will need to purchase park admission separately.

Day 4 - Alpine sightseeing from Going-to-the-Sun Road

This morning brings a highlight of your vacation as you travel through Glacier National Park just as they did in the 1930s: aboard an open-air Red Jammer bus. Your Crown of the Continent tour traces the stunning Going-to-the-Sun Road to the top of the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. Truly awe-inspiring views surround you at every turn, with sprawling valleys giving way to towering mountain ranges and sparkling lakes adorned by lush evergreens. Spot ancient sheets of ice and look for wildlife as you continue to the west side of the park.

The tour pauses at Lake McDonald Lodge, where you can enjoy an optional lunch before retracing the journey back to St. Mary Village. Your evening is then free to unwind after a thrilling day of sightseeing. Overnight St. Mary Village.

Please note: The Crown of the Continent Tour is subject to change based on seasonal road closures and availability.

Day 5 - Relaxing at Glacier Park Lodge

With a leisurely start to the day, you could have breakfast at St. Mary Village or grab a cozy cup of coffee to enjoy while seeking out the perfect view. There is time to head out on one of the local trails to revel in your spectacular natural surroundings before an included coach transfer takes you back to the historic Glacier Park Lodge.

The drive further illustrates Montana's rugged beauty, and as you arrive at Glacier Park Lodge, you are free to continue enjoying your time at your own pace. This afternoon is an ideal time to admire the scenery from the lodge's golf course. You could also take advantage of the horseshoe pit or pick up souvenirs in the gift shop before exploring the onsite dining options this evening. Overnight Glacier Park Lodge.

Day 6 - A day in East Glacier before reboarding the Empire Builder

With a free day in East Glacier, you are welcome to continue to unwind at the lodge or to sightsee further. You might like to use your time to hike along one of the scenic trails near Glacier Park Lodge. With options featuring lake views or even waterfalls, there are many ways to enjoy nature. Alternatively, you can purchase a shuttle ticket (payable locally) to travel into the Two Medicine Valley, home to Two Medicine Lake. Here, enjoy the opportunity to explore on boat tours, rent kayaks or canoes, or hike one of the scenic trails.

However you choose to spend your day, transfer independently to the train station this evening to reboard your Amtrak train bound for Seattle. As you take your Coach seat, you can enjoy an evening perspective on the surrounding mountains and forests before settling in for the night. Overnight train.

Day 7 - Traveling home

Scenes of rivers and alpine foothills frame the horizon as the train enters the beautiful state of Washington this morning. As the route proceeds toward Seattle, sweeping views of the Cascade Mountains surround the tracks, and the Empire Builder passes through delightful mountain towns, including the charming town of Leavenworth.

When you see Mount Rainier looming in the distance, you have reached the final miles to the Emerald City, Seattle. On arrival this afternoon, you are free to see sites like the Space Needle or Pike Place Market independently, or you can begin your journey home by transferring to Seattle's airport.

There is so much to see and do in this coastal city. Should you wish to add extra nights or excursions to explore Seattle and its surroundings, speak with a Rail Specialist.

The ride was as comfortable as it could be for the space confinement of a train. We got the roomette which was well worth the upgrade over coach. All meals were included and you can lay down to sleep. There is a private cabin available for quite a bit more money where there is a sink and private toilet/shower. It’s nice to let someone else do the driving while you just sit and look at the scenery or rest.

Vacation by Rail made it very easy to book our trip, and answered all our pre-trip questions quickly. The train staff was polite and helpful, and facilitated boarding and debarking the train. Additionally, the service and qualify of food in the dining car were impressive. We very much enjoyed watching the countryside from our cabin. However, the train tracks themselves have not been well-maintained, making for a rocky riding experience. Sadly, St. Mary's Lodge was experiencing staffing shortages and turmoil, making the dining experience there fairly unenjoyable. The park itself was spectacular. Very glad we made the trip.

In spite of changes in our travel plans caused by weather, the trip was wonderful. Attention to details and our comfort made the trip memorable, as well as relaxing. Service was provided in a friendly and consistent manner. This was my husband's first train trip, and he had a great time.
