Wai-O-Tapu

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Reserve is an active geothermal system at the southern end of the Okataina Volcanic Centre, just north of Reporoa Caldera. The reserve is considered to be New Zealand's most colourful and diverse geothermal sightseeing attraction boasting many hot springs and the Lady Knox Geyser. Named after Lady Constance Knox, the second daughter of Uchter Knox, 15th Governor of New Zealand, the volcano is one of the more colourful thermal areas providing visitors with a choice of walking tracks.

At 10.15 daily you can see the Geyser erupt at heights of 10 to 20 metres that can last as long as an hour. Take this opportunity to visit New Zealand's largest mud pool, the site of a former mud volcano destroyed through erosion in the 1920s and experience the unique sounds of erupting mud.
