Surrounded by the glorious countryside of 'the garden of England', charming Royal Tunbridge Wells is one of Kent's best-loved towns. Its history dates back to 1606, when the discovery of a spring in the area led to the town's development as a spa retreat. Following a visit from Charles I's wife Queen Henrietta Maria in 1630, the spa's popularity soared, and by the 18th century the Georgians made Tunbridge Wells the place to see and be seen. Owing to the continued popularity amongst the Royal family since the spa's discovery, in 1909 Edward VII granted the town its 'Royal' status.

The Old Town
Today Royal Tunbridge Well is a joy to discover, boasting a range of great things to see, exciting places to eat, and some fantastic shopping opportunities. The delightful Old Town, known as 'the Pantiles', is home to a wonderful variety of specialist shops, and is arguably a highlight of any visit to the town. It is also where the famous Chalybeate Spring comes to the surface - and in summer months you can still "take the waters", served by a dipper in traditional costume.
