About the tour
Adventurers unite for this unique opportunity to explore Southern Africa and Namibia by train. This rail journey begins in the city of Cape Town, where our time is spent on a guided city tour, soaking up the scenery and enjoying the local fare. After a night in the city, we set off on our luxury expedition aboard the African Explorer. Take in the panoramas from the window-lined lounge car as we journey out of the city and into the vast wilderness, or relax with your fellow travelers in the bar car or one of the two restaurant cars. With full-day stops in places such as Augrabies National Park, Namib Naukluft National Park and Etosha National Park, we have the opportunity to see antelope, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, big cats and some of Africa's other common wildlife in their natural settings. This tour offers much more than just animals, though; enjoy colonial architecture in Swakopmund, massive sand dunes in the Namib Desert, early 20th-century history in Kolmanskop and so much more. We wrap up our time in Africa with an authentic safari before arriving in the final stop of Windhoek, which makes this 14-day rail journey one to remember for a lifetime.
Journey is also available from Windhoek to Cape Town based on your travel preference.

An exciting adventure! Great tour director who was able to adjust things we had planned due to weather conditions.

This was a very fun trip!!! We felt lucky to get to see the Northern Lights which was the main reason for going. Some of our accomodations weren't quite up to par, but our tour guide was great!

Excellent experience (albeit cold). Visited several locations in Norway and Sweden, and of course always on the lookout for the Northern LIghts....and we saw them!! Other excursions (Sami village and dogsledding) added to the adventure.
