Ofoten Railway from Kiruna an Gallivare to Narvik
Once hailed as the most northern and the coldest railway
globally and today, the world's most northerly electrified rail
line, the Ofoten Railway takes natural beauty to the extreme.
Narvik, situated ideally on Norway's northwestern coast, is the
starting point for this journey. From there, the train weaves
through uninhabited stretches to Kiruna, set across the border in
the Swedish Lapland. Imposing mountain ranges and dramatic fjords
lead the course between destinations, and the uninhabited lands
leave nothing to be desired. Travelers gaze upon vast meadows and
mountain plateaus. Sparkling waters adjoin the harsh terrain, and
sometimes, herds of reindeer can be spotted grazing in the
distance. An unfiltered look at the Arctic Circle's unique
landscapes lies ahead with each journey on this endlessly
impressive rail line.
Passengers are seated in heated carriages for the trip's duration,
with large picture windows offering unrestricted views over the
passing vistas. Some windows on the train open, which is a
significant perk for those travelers hoping to photograph the
Nordic landscape in all its grandeur. There is a total of 270 seats
per departure, with two seats on either side of the aisle. Some of
the chairs are even arranged in bays of four with a table in the
middle to facilitate easy conversation between travelers. Light
snacks and drinks are available for purchase aboard the Ofoten
Railway, and helpful guides offer stories and anecdotes throughout
the journey. Ten or eleven trains make the journey daily throughout
the year.
