Kufstein
The attractive town of Kufstein has much to recommend it; as well as a charming centre, the town is surrounded by glorious mountain ranges and the sparkling lakes Hechtsee and Stimersee. Kufstein's position has long made it a sought-after strategic base for the rulers of both the Tyrol and nearby Bavaria - in fact, the town is known to have changed hands at least six times since the Middle Ages.
A pivotal point of the town's defence - the mighty Kufstein Fortress - is today arguably the town's highlight. This defensive structure has been perched on a hill above Kufstein since at least 1205, though the imposing Emperor's Tower was added in 1522. Today, you can roam around the grounds and the castle's ramparts to enjoy the simply spectacular views of the Inn Valley below.
