Wolfgangsee

One of the best known lakes in Austria's Lake District, the emerald waters of Wolfgangsee stretch for about six miles through some truly outstanding scenery. The lake is also lined by some popular towns along its shores, including the enchantingly pretty market town of St Wolfgang and the equally attractive St Gilgen. The lake and the town are named after the local Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg who, according to legend, built the first church in the town of the same name in the late 10th century. As the lake is so large, the end by St Gilgen is also sometimes referred to as Abersee. With such beautiful scenery and a number of activities and attractions on offer, the lake has naturally attracted many tourists over the years.
