Situated on top of a wooded hill, Dunster Castle overlooks the pretty Exmoor village of the same name, and affords great views over the Bristol Channel. The home of the Luttrell family, Dunster Castle was their primary seat for more than 600 years, when the dynasty's lands stretched out across much of Exmoor. There has been a fortress on the site since at least Norman times, though only the gatehouse remains completely intact from that period, because much of the castle was later remodelled by Victorian architects.

Dunster Castle

Dunster Castle was donated to the public in 1976, and today the castle is a delight to explore. As a family home that has adapted to the times, the castle boasts a range of historical features from a number of different eras. Of particular note are the lavish Tudor furnishings and the fine, detailed ceilings and grand staircase from the 17th century.
