Viviers

Originally the capital of an early Gaulish tribe, the charming town of Viviers began to develop significantly in the 5th century AD, when a bishopric was established here. The ecclesiastical precinct, set on a rocky plateau, is dominated by the cathedral of St Vincent and is noted for its lavish vaulting and ornate tapestries. The rest of town has also been preserved well; along with its historic defensive walls, there is an extensive warren of narrow streets, with buildings that have been carefully renovated to further enhance their historic appearance.

Another of the area's most popular attractions is the surrounding scenery. Set on the bank of the Rhône, Viviers is also in the heart of the magnificent Ardéche landscape - dominated by terraced chestnut woods and orchards, fortified villages and farmsteads. The town is a great place to admire this truly magnificent scenery; from the cathedral terrace there are clear views over the Rhône Valley to Mont Ventoux.
