Schengen
Close to the border between France, Luxembourg and Germany, the quiet village of Schengen was primarily known for its wine production. This changed in 1985, when the pretty village was chosen - due to its significant position on the tri-border - as the site of a major European treaty. The Schengen Treaty was signed by France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, to formalise an agreement amongst these countries to abolish border controls between them. The agreement was signed on 14th June 1985, and came into full effect within ten years. Viewed as a great success, it was seen as a significant aid to European travel and 25 countries have since signed the agreement. Today there are a number of monuments in the village, commemorating the historic treaty.
