About the tour

Nine days: That is all you need to gain an insider's perspective of Alaska on this escorted tour. Your time in The Last Frontier begins in Fairbanks, where a riverboat tour acquaints you with the local waterways, and a trip to Trail Breaker Kennel allows you to experience one of Alaska's favorite pastimes, dog sledding. It is also from Fairbanks that we board the storied rails of the Alaskan Railroad for a ride aboard the  Denali Star. The train will take us right into the heart of Denali National Park, where great adventure meets wildlife spotting and breathtaking scenery. Continuing on the  Denali Star, we move through the vast open terrain as we make our way to Talkeetna. The view along the way is truly inspiring - keep your camera within reach. An overnight stay allows you to soak in the charm of this destination before we continue southbound to Anchorage, down the Turnagain Arm and finally down through the Kenai Peninsula before arriving in Seward. It is in Seward that we have a gateway to one of the most majestic places in southern Alaska, Kenai Fjords National Park. As we wrap up our grand Alaskan journey, we spend some time in Whittier, journey out to Prince William Sound by boat and even take one last ride on the Alaskan Railroad, this time aboard the  Glacier Discovery. If it is adventure that calls you, the great land of Alaska is the answer.

Our tour was fantastic! Mary, our tour manager was amazing! She handled everything and was so informative about Alaska and the sites we visited. She really brought Alaska to life and made our experience even more fun. She loves her job and it shows! From the motor coach to the trains, and all the places we visited, it was thoroughly enjoyable. We were a small group of 24 which made for a more intimate experience, as we made new friends quickly. This tour has a lot packed into 9 days-we had something planned as a group everyday but also had time for ourselves to do what we wanted. It gives you an overview of the interior of Alaska, immersing you into the life and culture as well. Very well done.

Overall, a fantastic way to see, hear and feel Alaska. The tour manager, Cheryl Sennet, did an exceptional job managing and leading the tour. Eric and Premier motor coach was great too! Accommodations were fine but Edgewater hotel in Seward was a great location. Don’t expect fantastic food on the train or on excursions but it most provided meals were good. Still, worth every penny!

We were disappointed with this trip. Biggest complaint is that there was information we should have had before the start of the trip regarding optional activities. For example, the Cabin Nite Dinner Theater in Denali, the names of good restaurants we might want to make reservations at, white water rafting near Denali Park. By the time we got this information, these activities were sold out. We got our schedule for the next day late in the afternoon by photographing the tour leader's iPad which was passed around the bus. Couldn't this be done with a sheet of paper or an email to the group earlier in the tour? We've been on tours that provide a much more complete itinerary and schedule (including options) before the tour begins. Visiting Denali National Park was supposed to be a highlight of the tour. The Denali bus tour was very disappointing, although the talk by the native American was good. We subsequently discovered that there is a longer Wilderness tour. Maybe that tour would be better, even if it was a cost-adding option. On our tour, we sure didn't get very far into the park and a few of the group managed to see one caribou. The tram ride to the top of Alyeska was nice view on the way up but nothing of interest at the top. The train rides were great (including the meal on board). The highlight of the trip was the cruise into Kenai Fjords National Park- this was outstanding. We saw lots of wildlife and the boat captain was an excellent leader. The bus driver was excellent. Our own tour leader was helpful and friendly but not always well organized. This was an expensive tour. We know that this is partly due to the high cost of accommodation in Alaska at high season, but it did not live up to our expectations.

Very good mix of activities. Cheryl, the tour manager, and Eric the driver, were great. The hotels were nice and most had good views.
