The first three days of the trip were everything we expected. The trip down the Kenai Peninsula and the whale watching and glacier viewing boat ride were terrific. The train ride from Seward to Anchorage was spectacular. Then, early Monday morning as we checked-in for the train trip to Denali National Park, we were informed that a wildfire near the entrance to the park had led to the park closing and a wide-spread power outage. Our hotel had no electric power or running water. We were given the option to not go, but had no alternatives, Over the next 4 days, every part of the planned trip was cancelled. We missed the helicopter ride, the wilderness tour and the scenic train rides since busses were substituted for trains. I know the wildfire was unpredictable, but given the fixed itinerary, we had no options but to sit at the Denali Grande for 3 days. The final stop at Talkeetna was marked by cold drizzle and again nothing to see or do. We missed 2/3 of the scenic train rides and all of the activities scheduled for the Denali area. This was a first trip to Alaska and unfortunately was more disapointing that rewarding.

Accommodations were below average Getting luggage in Anchorage was a disaster, took an hour and hour each time. People was great and friendly. The bus tour for 61/2 was very bad, an old bus that was packed, should have been a luxury Bus provided for the cost .

We had a wonderful vacation. At the same time, I would not book a trip with vacations by rail again. The communication was very inefficient. For example, I had to ask three times for the correct itineary and in the end call while on a trip to the US. We specifically asked to be in rooms with King Beds instead of two queens. None of the hotels we stayed at received this request and we only had rooms with two queens. As said before, the trip itself was really good. But next time, I would book and plan it myself and in the end I don’t think that would have taken me more time.
