The Piazza dei Miracoli also contains other beautiful sights, including the marble-striped cathedral and the domed baptistry.

After returning to Florence, where there's free time to unwind or continue exploring, a coach picks us up and drives us through the beautiful countryside to the oldest restaurant in Tuscany, the gorgeous Renaissance-era Il Borgo Machiavelli. Priced too high for what you got. More than half the hotels were not centrally located. Two of the 6 hotels were GROSS (mold on shower grout, smelled of urine, glob of hair in shower from previous guests, bathroom so small my MIL got a knot on her head from hitting the counting when getting off the toilet!); super small elevators which needed to be used because you had to carry ALL your luggage up to your rooms. The rail stations were chaotic and nerve-wracking; our excursion to Pisa was cancelled due to rail employees striking. One hotel basically held us hostage by locking the lobby doors and threatening to call police on us because we refused to pay the taxes that our tour manager specifically told us not to pay if the hotel tried to charge…needless to say we paid it, it was 3:30 AM when we were on our way out to the airport at the end of the tour. The meals were fair. The hotel in Switzerland was PHENOMENAL, as was the excursion to Mt. Pilatus. I would expect a tour at this price to include entrances to main attractions like the Eiffel Tower, Colosseum, Tower of London, etc, but it did not. And because you do not get the itinerary until 8-10 days prior to the start of the tour, it makes it EXTREMELY difficult to schedule these attractions on your own. The itinerary you do end up getting does not include the time of your excursions, only the date. I contacted the tour company asking for times of the excursion to ensure I didn’t double-book, which they did provide. However, the schedule they provided changed and I wasn’t made aware of this until it was too late for me to cancel the excursion I had scheduled. It was between the tour provided excursion to the Vatican or a tour inside the Colosseum/Roman Forum….I chose the Vatican, so I ended up wasting $375! IMPORTANT POINT: entrances to Eiffel Tower, Colosseum , etc….sell out SUPER FAST from their official sites. Tickets from these official sites are very economical…however, when they sell out you are left with either buying tickets from tour companies, like Viator, who charge 5-8x as much! But when your tour company doesn’t give you an itinerary until 8-10 days prior to the start of your tour, you either pay the outrageous price or miss the attraction….if I’m going to travel that far, I wanted to see them! It was such a messy stressful time trying to schedule these attractions while keeping in mind the crappy itinerary info I received from VBR. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS TOUR. The only saving grace of this tour was our tour manager, Carina Robinson. She was a delight, such a great personality and shared many tips.

Overall, the trip was excellent. Our tour guide was terrific! She handled everything well, right down to dealing with a rail strike! The hotel rooms were fine. The river cruise in Paris and the evening at Villa Machiavelli were wonderful! The train ride through the Alps was beautiful! The food during group meals was delicious. Don't forget to bring a sweater or jacket. It's cold up there! If we could change anything, it would be to add more chairs and benches all across Europe! If you cannot walk for hours without an opportunity to sit down, don't take this trip. GRJ needs to only use hotels where a bus can pick us up at the front door, and coaches need to be waiting for us when we leave each train right outside the station. And launches in Venice need to be larger and more stable for easier boarding. We made friends on the trip who we will keep for a lifetime! Thank you to everyone whose efforts made this wonderful experience possible!

Involved a lot of walking. Coach could have been provided in many cases. Visited Leaning tower of Pisa, Eifel Tower and just had to see it from the street. Group was not taken onto the Towers. We were told in case we wanted to do that we could go online and buy tickets. We have gone on many other trips and tickets were booked to enter important sites by the organizers.
