I typically set low expectations for people and events, and that way, I'm rarely disappointed. That was not the case with the Highlights of Europe Tour offered by Vacations By Rail / Great Rail Journeys! This tour exceed our expectations in every possible way. The travel logistics were excellent, whether by rail, bus or boat. The lodging was superb and well positioned in relation to the major sites in each city. The special events were amazing - seeing the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace; the dinner cruise on the River Seine; the boat ride to and cog railway ascent of Mt. Pilatus; the first glimpse of the Grand Canal and St. Mark's Square in Venice; the tour and dinner at Machiavelli's home outside of Florence; the tour of ancient Rome especially the colosseum and the forum; and especially the tour of the Vatican Museums and the chance of a lifetime to see Pope Francis deliver his weekly address to the public. But, what made the tour special for us was our tour leader, Carina "Cat" Robinson. She was able to handle the 39-person group with expertise, and I know she worked very hard during the day and behind the scenes. She provided great commentary, personal stories, and displayed a good sense of humor as well. Cat made the trip the overwhelming success that it was. We will use this company again!
