About the tour

The Old West's rugged frontier towns and renowned national historic sites are hallmarks of this 11-day escorted tour. We begin our journey across America's Western frontier by joining modern technology with nostalgic travel methods, riding Amtrak's California Zephyr from Chicago to Provo, Utah. The route takes us across the Rocky Mountains and through hidden landscapes where the West's beauty comes to life one mile at a time. Our adventure begins in Provo, taking us to places like the cowboy towns of Jackson and Cody, Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, and into the Black Hills of South Dakota, where immense history and impressive landscapes collide. Memorable excursions ranging from riding a heritage train to embarking on a Jeep safari ride leave you awestruck and introduce you to the thrills only the Wild West can offer.

Amtrak came close to ruining the entire trip. What a terrible experience that was. This was in no way the fault of vacations by rail however. It became tiresome to have customer service people barking things were not available because it was the end of the season. As far as I know there were no discounts because it was the end of the season so things should have been available. Our bus driver and tour director were saviors!

We were disappointed in the Amtrak experience with delays, poor food quality, and unfriendly staff. However, we had a great time once the actual tour started and wanted to give 5 stars overall, especially to our tour guide Sally Bell! Our driver Ron was also great.

I have already sent a review. Disappointed due to issues stated on my previouse review. Train was a fiasco. Getting details for trip at the eleventh hour should never have been so late. 2 of 4 professional guides were not used (Yellowstone and Badlands). First hotel. We paid as part of trip and were able to spend less than 2 hours at the Provo Mariott. Hurried shower and breakfast due to late arrival. Your airfare travel agent booked window/middle and not aisle/middle as requested. There were 5 of us on this trip in our group. ALL disappointed. We feel we should get a partial reimbursement. Unhappy customers!!!!!

Gave a 4 star only because the initial train ride was not good. I understand they had no control over the flat spot on one of the tires, but they did know that the crew was going to hit their 12 hour limit and could have had a new crew waiting at one of the stops before 12 hours was up. Instead we waited more than 2 hours for a new crew.

The trip was excellent except for the Amtrak California Zephyr. Delayed so we spent 2 nights on the train instead of 1. Dirty bathrooms with overflowing trash. The rest of the tour was great - our tour guide, Sally, enhanced the experience.
