Exploring Delhi

You enjoy a private sightseeing tour of New and Old Delhi today. See India's bustling capital in a unique way on this intimate and informative private tour. The tour lasts all day and includes a private guide and entry to monuments. You'll be picked up from your hotel and see the 17th-century Jama Masjid mosque, take a traditional rickshaw ride, visit Humayun's Tomb and the Sunder Nursery, where you can see rare and local trees in the city's first arboretum. Alternatively, choose one of our optional excursions, available at a supplement.

Day 3 – Boarding the Maharajas’ Express

Boarding the Maharajas’ Express

Joining the Maharajas' Express this morning, you enjoy a welcome drink and settle into your new surroundings. One of the world's most luxurious trains, the tasteful décor is inspired by the carriages of Indian royalty as you follow in the steps of maharajas. There's an excellent standard of cuisine and impeccable service onboard, which you experience during brunch onboard.

Later, the train arrives in Agra, where you alight to visit one of the new Seven Wonders of the World after breakfast. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his favorite queen, Mumtaz. Constructed entirely from white marble, this masterpiece was created by approximately 20,000 craftsmen. After this incredible excursion, you return to the Maharajas' Express for your first dinner onboard and spend the night in your luxurious cabin.

You'll visit the historic Agra Fort this morning, and then it's back to the train to enjoy a relaxed breakfast as you travel to your next destination, Ranthambore. Lunch is also served onboard before you arrive and set out on a guided safari in open-topped vehicles. Originally the private hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur, you have the chance to seek out amazing wildlife in their natural habitat. Although these beautiful creatures can be elusive, so a sighting can't be guaranteed, it is possible to see a Bengal tiger. The park is also home to wild boar, sloth bear, hyena, jackal and leopard. Returning to the train, you can savor dinner this evening.

Leaving the train after breakfast this morning, you will visit the Amber Fort by Jeep. Set in picturesque and rugged hills overlooking Jaipur, this fort palace is a fascinating blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture, constructed of red sandstone and white marble. The rugged exterior hides an inner paradise with a beautiful fusion of art and architecture. Step back into the Mughal era as you enjoy a tour of the royal apartments, the Chamber of Mirrors and the Hall of Victory.

Lunch is served aboard the train, after which you could select from one of the optional excursions. You can choose to spend time relaxing in a spa at a five-star hotel, visit the City Palace and Jantar Mantar, or explore the 'Pink City' of Jaipur in a private car with a guide. Later, enjoy an exclusive dinner at the Rambagh Palace Hotel. Built in 1835, this was the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur from 1925 to 1957.

Breakfast is served onboard this morning, before you arrive in the desert citadel city of Bikaner. Take some free time to explore the city independently before returning to the train for lunch. After dining, you'll visit Junagarh - built in 1593 by Raja Rai Singh. One of the most impressive forts in Rajasthan, it's also one of the few not to be built on a hilltop. While architecturally stunning from the outside, the real beauty of this moated citadel lies inside, with intricately carved and spectacularly decorated walls. The Diwan-i-Khas, Phool Mahal, Hawa Mahal, Badal Mahal and Anup Mahal with delight and amaze. After, a convoy of camel carts accompanied by musicians takes you for sundowners - evening drinks on the sand dunes. Enjoy cocktails and traditional barbecue delicacies while the sun sets over the desert as you experience traditional folk arts like the Langaas and Kalbeliyas.

Arriving in Jodhpur, enjoy a leisurely breakfast onboard before free time either relaxing on the train or on one of the optional tours. Choose between exploring the Bishnoi villages, unwinding at a five-star hotel's spa facilities, visiting Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum and Jaswant Thada, or touring the city in a private car with guide.

Returning to the train for lunch onboard, you later journey to the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort. Towering 400 feet over the streets below, this magnificent stone citadel blends into the rugged, perpendicular cliff and showcases various architectural styles. From here, a walking tour of the Old Clock Tower Market. A tuk-tuk ride will take you into the market, where you can catch glimpses of local lives while passing old houses and ornate havelis. Finally, enjoy an exclusive cocktail evening with a special Marwar meal served at an exclusive venue.

Waking in the historic region of Mewar, one of the most popular royal states of the Rajputana, watch the landscape of the Aravali Hills pass by while you enjoy breakfast. On arrival in Udaipur, the 'City of Lakes', your explorations begin with a boat ride on Lake Pichola, followed by a visit to the ornately decorated City Palace, believed to be the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. Here, you'll view Mor Chowk with its lavish mosaics of peacocks, Moti Mahal with beautiful mirror work, Chini Mahal, and the spectacular Zenana Mahal.

Lunch is a regal treat as you indulge in Indian cuisine at the Satkar Hall of five-star Taj Fateh Prakash Palace. A relaxed afternoon aboard the Maharajas' Express follows as you journey onward to Mumbai. Enjoy an 'Indian Evening' onboard and relax for your final night on this exquisite train.

Enjoy your last morning onboard the opulent Maharajas' Express with a leisurely breakfast and lunch, before it's time to disembark at Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai. Your Indian Splendor journey comes to an end here, but your adventure continues. On arrival the country's financial capital, you'll be transferred to the hotel of your choice. Arising early today, you get to know the city on a Mumbai by Dawn tour. Getting an exclusive peek into the real life of the city, you'll see men and women bargain with the wholesale fruit and vegetable vendors, visit Sassoon docks to see 10 to 20 tons of fish arrive in the city. See the bread-boys carrying fresh bread and visit the flower and fresh vegetable markets. You'll discover the treasures of Mumbai's community that you'd miss at a regular hour.
