On leaving Zweisimmen we begin our steady ascent to the resort of Saanenmöser and then continue to the summit of the line, the Saanenmöser Pass, at 4,183 feet (1,275m). From here we descend to the fashionable skiing and summer resort of Gstaad and travel through the pretty, chalet-filled villages of the Saanenland region.

As we leave the German-speaking Saanenland, you will notice that the village names become French. One of the first villages we come to is Châteaux d'Oex - a popular destination for hot air ballooning. We continue through the Pays d'Enhaut valley to the village of Montbovon before ascending through wild, Alpine scenery towards the Jaman Tunnel.

During our journey through the tunnel, the longest on the line, we leave the Alps behind and emerge to a more Mediterranean landscape. From here the train encounters the steepest gradient on the line - a descent of 1 in 37 - through woodland to the winter resort of Les Avants. The GoldenPass Line reaches Lake Geneva, offering magnificent views of the lake's glittering waters and the surrounding peaks. The train makes its final descent through vineyards, twisting and turning through a series of impressive horseshoe curves to our final destination, lively Montreux.

“Excellent tour and tour guide. Opportunity for a great over-view of Switzerland and it's scenic trains. Nice hotels but the rooms were mid-range priced rooms, not upper-class rooms. Dinners provided by the tour were very poor. One night we were given a chance to select our preference between goulash and turkey and most people selected goulash but, when we arrived, only turkey was available. Limiting choices to only 2 items was not very good to begin with but, only providing turkey in Switzerland was ridiculous. How many Americans travel to Switzerland to have turkey for dinner? 2 dinners were provided in Zurich (both at the same restaurant) and the choices were limited to 3 not very attractive items. We skipped the second dinner. The tour guide was great, providing a great deal of commentary and direction throughout the tour. The tour was flexible and allowed people to do other things on their own if they didn't want to do the scheduled event. The train accommodations were very good and the train rides were comfortable and scenic. I would have expected a tour run by the train company would provide first class seat tickets (they did not) but, the second class arrangements were fine. And, providing the full Swiss travel pass (instead of the half pass that they said they would provide) to everyone was a nice touch. Overall, we were very happy with our tour.
