About the tour

Three spectacular regions and an endless number of romantic destinations combine on this 9-day rail and cruise expedition. Atop the gentle waters of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers, explore charming towns and wonderful cities that exude history and culture. Stops along the way speak to the region's early Roman influences and boast architecture that span the ages. Enjoy time in Luxembourg, where castles dot the countryside, and the capital offers a world of contrasts, both in its buildings and heritage. From here, we venture to Germany's oldest city, Trier; one of the most notable wine towns on the Moselle, Bernkastel; Cochem, whose imposing castle is just one of the impressive buildings that fill the town; Koblenz, where the Rhine and the Moselle meet; Rüdesheim, home to a rich and colorful past; and Speyer, where sites from the Roman and medieval periods shine. We travel between ports of call aboard a five-star Amadeus river cruise vessel and dock for the last time in Strasbourg, where the second part of the journey begins by rail. We venture into Switzerland bound for Interlaken, with views of the Alps, Lakes Thun and Brienz paving the course to our beautiful hotel. A highlight of our time here is a memorable excursion to the "Top of Europe" aboard the Jungfrau Railway. Between the long-reaching views over mountain ranges, glaciers, and cities and the amenities at the top, there is no experience quite like this cog railway. What an incredible ending to this tour filled with wine, wonderful stories, and some of the best scenery in all of Europe.

Day 2 - Luxembourg City

We awake in Remich and set off on today's excursion to Luxembourg City. Our guided tour takes us through Constitution Square, with its Golden Lady monument, and past the Grand Duke's Palace. Continuing, we get a glimpse at the various districts that encompass the city, including Kirchberg Plateau, a modern enclave that houses the city's business and banking district. All glass, steel, sharp angles and contemporary designs, this district sits in distinct contrast to the more historical portions of Luxembourg City. We pass various EU institutions as we travel through Kirchberg and make our way toward the railway station district. Historical structures from the 19th and early 20th centuries abound here and are constructed in varying styles, such as Art Deco and Art Nouveau. Our trip continues through the city, offering glimpses of the old fortifications that surround and structures that hint at the country's Roman, French and Prussian influences. We return to the ship in time for lunch, then set sail for our next destination, Grevenmacher, near the German border, where you have time to explore on your own You could take a stroll through the riverside town or visit one of the local Moselle wine makers. Day 3 - Trier & Bernkastel

We moor in Piesport this morning and board a motorcoach for an excursion to Germany's oldest city, Trier. Brimming with Roman influences and medieval designs, this locale is a historian's dream. From Porta Nigra, one of the city's remaining gates from the Roman period over 1,700 years ago, to the medieval market and stunning places of worship, including the Church of Our Lady, there is no shortage of sites to uncover.

Lunch is served aboard the ship as we sail for Bernkastel-Kues, a beloved wine-growing epicenter. On arrival, we get to know the city on a guided tour, meandering through Old Town and listening to tales from the past. Set in the heart of the Moselle Valley, Moselle wines are a specialty, and we stop at a nearby vineyard for a wine tasting. We enjoy two different varietals, including the world-famous "Doctorwein," which touts health benefits alongside its delicious flavor. Overnight ship.

Our guide leads us through the city's narrow, winding streets, past traditional half-timbered houses and the original 14th-century gates. We venture through Market Square and past sites like the old town hall en route to the pinnacle of the tour, Reichsburg Castle. Perched upon a hilltop overlooking the city and the dreamy Moselle Valley, the fortress was originally built in the 12th century but was reconstructed in its current form in 1868. Hints of the original structure remain in the hexagonal tower and the ring wall. Views from the castle's turrets are stunning. Overnight ship.

Day 5 - Koblenz & Rüdesheim

Steeped in over 2,000 years of history, Koblenz is our first stop for the day. Even more of Koblenz and its surrounding scenery is visible from above on the Koblenz Cable Car, which we ride over the top of the Rhine to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. This hilltop stronghold looks over the river 400 feet below and is a fantastic place to explore the area's colorful history.

After sailing through the Rhine Gorge, we dock at Rüdesheim's harbor early this evening and are met by the Winzerexpress train, our chariot to the city center- the starting point of our walking tour. We make our way along the Drosselgasse, a street lined with traditional pubs and wine cellars, to the market square. Our tour is capped off with a tasting of Rüdesheim coffee, a warm alcoholic beverage that combines coffee, sugar cubes and German Asbach brandy. Overnight ship.

Day 6 - Speyer

We arrive in Speyer early this morning, and after breakfast, we embark upon a walking tour to the city's greatest sites. Speyer has a prime location on the banks of the Rhine and has attracted visitors for over 1,000 years. With this comes a rich and colorful history, which we explore as we walk through the city. Set your sights on structures dating back to the Romans, like the Old Gate, the last remaining piece of the 68 towers and gates that once surrounded the city. Passing through romantic squares and walking along narrow, winding streets, the group discovers several important chapels, including the Church of the Holy Spirit from the early 1700s. Speyer's piece de resistance comes in the form of another church, the Speyer Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A four-room crypt lies underneath the church and is the final resting place for kings and dignitaries. Overnight ship.
