You could experience firsthand Rudesheim's most famous produce - wine, with a fantastic tasting, savoring the finest local varieties. Alternatively, you could visit Siegfried's Mechanical Music Cabinet and discover Europe's largest collection of finely tuned mechanical instruments, from antique music boxes to miniature pianos. Afterwards, there's some time to explore the town at leisure before we return to our ship.

This afternoon we begin sailing and enjoy a highlight of our cruising experience - the romantic Rhine Gorge. This section of the Rhine is renowned for its spectacular views. The riverbanks plunge deeper here, and we wind around bends surrounded by endless miles of lush green vineyards, ancient castles, and picturesque riverside towns. It's also one of the narrowest points of the river with one of the strongest currents. As we sail, we hear the fascinating story of the legendary Lorelei Rock, which soars almost 500 feet out of the water. This monument has been the inspiration for countless myths and legends, and we hear of them as we sail by.

Our journey through the Rhine Gorge comes to an end, and we arrive later this afternoon in the town of Koblenz, located at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. You have time to explore, and we recommend strolling to Deutsches Eck where you'll be surrounded by inspiring vistas, including the mighty Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Later, we make our way back to the ship, where dinner is served onboard.

We set sail early, navigating the tranquil waters of the Moselle river. After a morning of relaxed cruising through delightful river scenery, our ship pulls into the port of Cochem where the stunning Moselle Valley surrounds us with rolling hills, half-timbered houses, and the majestic castle (the Reichsburg) perched on top of a hill.

After lunch onboard, we embark on our guided afternoon tour where we admire the Reichsburg dramatically located overlooking the Old Town. In the old quarter of Cochem, you'll find well-preserved sections of the ancient town walls and a fascinating arts center in a former monastery.

Following our tour, there's time to explore the picturesque streets at leisure. The town's central square is a hub of activity, surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and shops. We experience wonderful views across the Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany as we climb higher.

Back onboard this afternoon, we continue our cruise through beautiful scenery toward Cologne. As we approach the striking city, admire the fantastic cityscape of magnificent bridges that span the river and the imposing Cathedral. On arrival, a guided tour of the city introduces us to the joyful atmosphere of its streets and lively squares.

We admire the Romanesque townhouses before visiting the city's impressive Gothic cathedral, which is the largest in Northern Europe. The tour was great until the boat. The cruise director was seriously lacking in her ability to give direction and her choices for her idea of fun. There should have been more things to do at night besides dancing to a duo that really wasn't good. The food, wait staff and room staff were fantastic. The steam train excursion was not worth going on as it was an hour away and a 30 minute ride on the train. No great scenery or info. I probably will not use Vacations by rail again as it was lacking in direction and just left you on your own to figure out how to get to certain attractions. More info is needed at each stop on the Rhine part of the trip. Our first tour manager Andrew was the best though. Loved him. His concern for " his people" was above and beyond.

The entire trip was outstanding. The tour manager for the train portion of the tour, Andrew, was very calm and professional throughout. When unexpected issues arose, he handled them swiftly and kept everything moving smoothly. The hotels were top notch and very comfortable. There was plenty of time at each of the tour stops to explore and enjoy the local sights. The small group size, 19, allowed us to get to know the other travelers. When we arrived at the ship, the hand off was seamless to the cruise managers. The ship itself was very luxurious with very helpful and friendly staff. The food was excellent and the choices at each meal had something that everyone could enjoy. The cabin was very spacious with plenty of closet space and seating that was comfortable and provided excellent views from the window. The cruise manager gave a briefing each night informing us what was coming up for the next day, including excursions, ship movement, and any special games or entertainment. The excursions and free time in each port gave a good amount of time to see the sights. The local excursion guides were informative and entertaining providing additional information about the different places visited. The small amount of people (less than 160 on our trip) meant we were able to meet many different people from different regions and got to know most people by sight if not by name. My wife and I enjoyed the journey and the river cruise so much that we are already looking at which cruise we would like to take next.

Great way to see so many things in a short time. Wonderful land and cruise directors that made the trip even better! Thank you Andrew and Kate for providing a stress free trip. The ship and its crew were incredible and it really showed how much they enjoy their jobs. We can't wait to book our next trip.
