We are excited about the idea of a train trip. We upgraded to the private room and we’re just a little surprised about how small the room actually was the biggest disappointment came with the prepackaged microwave food we expected a little bit more from the description of getting “ Meals”. Other than Holly, Who was our room assistant, The rest of the Amtrak employees were rather unfriendly and or rude to us. Sadly, we will now think twice before ever taking another Amtrak vacation.

Bedrooms are ridiculously small. It is a joke to present them having a shower. You can’t take a shower without sitting on the toilet. Ridiculous. And cost way too much. Never again.

The Roomettes on this train are small and not comfortable especially for two people over the age of 55. The top bunk bed is hard, too close to the roof of the car and somewhat cramped. The bathroom is in close proximity to the room is also very small, less than that of a commercial airplane. I would recommend a full bedroom upgrade. On the positive note the Amtrak personnel were very helpful and the service was good. The food on the Trian was also good..

The first class accommodation at the lounge was perfect with the shower room ( complete with towels and toiletries), snacks and comfortable chairs. The meals in the train were savory and hot. Enjoyed every one of them. The train ride from Chicago to New Orleans went by pretty quickly with views of the Midwest towns. The hotels provided in Chicago and New Orleans were right in the center of downtown where you could walk to most places. Overall, all 4 of us enjoyed our experience!

My wife and I used Vacations By Rail to book our annual anniversary trip this year. We have long looked forward to taking a train trip. They booked us into a first-class hotel in Chicago, the Palmer House, and then the train trip (we rented a sleeper bedroom) was wonderful. Much better than air travel. They booked us into the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans, which was another absolutely wonderful hotel. Both hotels are historic grand hotels with an enormous amount of history to them, so it's like a trip and history lesson all in one. The staff was great in both places. The Chicago hotel was right on the Magnificent Mile, and the New Orleans hotel was right on the French Quarter. The customer service from Vacations By Rail was exemplary at every turn. I wish every travel experience could be as easy as this one was. It made our anniversary truly unforgettable.
