Our Guide to India

About India

India is a welcoming country with warm hospitality and a deep respect for visitors.

As the world's seventh largest country with a population of around 1.3 billion (the world's second largest), India is a diverse and fascinating destination. There are also an estimated 447 different languages spoken across the country. But don't worry, English is an official language and widely spoken, especially in tourist areas. Our expert guides and local hosts will ensure clear communication wherever you go.

With Himalayan foothills in the north, tropical backwaters and deserts in the south, India's geography means there's something to see all year round.

Each season has its own highlights, but many travelers prefer October to March for cooler temperatures in regions such as the Golden Triangle and further south. The cities, such as Delhi, Jaipur, and Mumbai blend ancient landmarks with modern life, but there is also a magnificent amount of wildlife to be savored - especially in Ranthambore National Park. This expansive wilderness is home to elusive Bengal tigers, leopards, crocodiles, cobras, jackals and more.

Whether you're uncovering Portuguese influences in Kerala and sailing along its scenic backwaters on a traditional kettuvallam houseboat or ascending one of the world's steepest railway lines taking you up through the tea plantations of Nilgiri, there's a wonderful diversity to India.

All this makes for an unforgettable vacation. And, at Vacations by Rail, we will make sure that it is everything that you hope it will be and more.

How to Navigate Indian Cultural Traditions / Culture

India's culture is, like the country itself, diverse. A lot of people will have some idea of Indian culture, but there's a lot more to explore - all depending on where you are and at what time of year.

Religion

Age-old festivals and holy days are often vibrant and colorful, and can be excellent ways to immerse yourself in the region's culture. Holi is held in spring and, as the 'festival of color', is one of the biggest annual events for Hindus. Beginning on the night of a new moon in late fall, Diwali is the Hindu 'festival of light'.

Religion plays a large role in Indian culture and society, and modesty is appreciated at religious sites. Lightweight, breathable clothing is best for the climate, and carrying a scarf or shawl is useful for women when covering shoulders is required. Comfortable walking shoes are a must!

Language

English is widely spoken across India, especially in tourist areas. Our expert guides and local hosts will ensure clear communication wherever you go.

Money

Credit cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger shops, but cash is useful for markets, small vendors, and tipping. It is customary to tip but not obligatory. Our expert guides will provide advice on appropriate tipping amounts for drivers, hotel staff, and guides, so you never have to guess.

As the markets and bazaars have a thriving bargaining culture, haggling is welcomed. When negotiating with a street merchant, you should never accept the first price you are offered as these could be up to 20 times the price they will eventually settle for. As always, our guides will be happy to assist or advise.

What to Expect from Indian Food / Food and Eating Out

India's cuisine is as diverse as its regions, featuring aromatic curries, freshly baked breads, and a wide array of vegetarian dishes. From creamy butter chicken to rich dal and crispy dosas, every meal is a flavorful experience.

However, it is not always spicy. While Indian food is known for its spices, that doesn't always mean heat. Many dishes are mild. In the Punjab region of northern India, many meals are vegetarian and mild with thick, rich sauces. Rajasthan's famed dishes such as biryanis can be fruity or sour, while Kerala is known for its coconut and seafood. Areas such as Goa and coastal Andhra Pradesh are where some of the spiciest dishes can be found.

While food safety can be a concern for independent travelers, we take care of meal arrangements to ensure they meet high standards, and we carefully select restaurants that prioritize hygiene and quality.

On our tours, we arrange delicious, safe, and authentic meals throughout your journey, ensuring you get to taste India's best flavors without worry - and will accommodate your preferences throughout the tour.
