Day 2 - Nuremberg Christmas Market
We kick off our time in Bavaria with a guided walking tour through Nuremberg. Our guide presents the vast history of the city and takes us to points of interest including the Nuremberg Castle and St. Lawrence Church, amongst others. As we meander through the streets, views of half-timber houses decked out in their Christmas best add to the festive ambiance. After the tour, you are free to visit the Christkindlmarkt, one of the most prestigious and atmospheric Christmas markets in the world. Smells of spiced nuts, Christmas desserts and mulled Glühwein fill the air as you walk through the brightly colored stalls that radiate from the Market Square in the Old Town. With holiday music and festive decor around each turn, it is hard not to be immersed in the unique atmosphere that comes with Advent in Germany.
The remainder of the day is at leisure to explore the city’s other attractions. Admire medieval architecture at the Kaiserburg Fortress, or discover the Third Reich’s impact on the city during World War II. You may wish to visit the Handwerkerhof, or Craftsmen's Courtyard, in the middle of the city, as well. Surrounded by the towers and walls of the medieval fortifications, this quaint area is a town of its own where can discover workshops and shops from craftsmen such as pewter workers, glassmakers, engravers, potters, gold and silversmiths. Overnight Nuremberg. (B)
Day 3 – Regensburg
Situated at the confluence of the Danube and Regen rivers, Regensburg is our destination today. By rail, we reach Regensburg this morning and enjoy the entire day at leisure to explore the town’s ancient sites and the spectacular Christmas markets. Regensburg has one of the best-preserved medieval centers in Europe; so well maintained that it has been named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perhaps visit St. Peter’s Church, with its impressive stained-glass windows from the Middle Ages. Thisis the greatest Gothic cathedral in Bavaria and took over 600 years to build.
At this time of year, holiday cheer fills the air in Regensburg. In addition to beautiful decorations throughout the city, there are also three Christmas Markets to explore. The largest is Regensburg Christmas Market, which is centered around the famous Neupfarrkirche church and has been voted as one of the best in German-speaking countries. There is also the Romantic Market just outside the gates of Thurn and Taxis Palace and Lucrezia Markt, which is right next to the Romantic Market and puts a high focus on handmade goods. Overnight Nuremberg. (B)
Day 4 - Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Leaving Nuremberg by coach, we head to a highlight of the Romantic Road, Rothenburg ob der Tauber. A magical townscape of quaint alleys, cobbled squares, half-timbered houses, city gates and medieval town walls awaits your exploration. Marvel at Rothenburg's stunning architecture as you meander through the storybook-perfect city. There are fantastic historical sites to explore, as well as a museum dedicated to Christmas. The Reiterlesmarkt is a jewel in Rothernburg’s crown, with over 500 years of festive history. There are more than 30,000 traditional German Christmas decorations throughout the market, theatrical aspects and plenty of authentic wares to peruse.
