West Coast Tours

Western United States

Home to some of the country's most inspiring destinations, the western U.S. is a treasure trove awaiting discovery. Tours of America's West can take you across the frontier to Colorado to explore the rugged Rocky Mountains and the historic towns that dot their peaks. Ride heritage rail lines through the stunning landscape or continue to destinations such as Salt Lake City, the cowboy town of Jackson, and San Francisco with smooth connections to places like Muir Woods with its Giant Sequoia groves and Yosemite National Park, home to Yosemite Falls - the highest waterfall in North America - as well as Half Dome and El Capitan.

Other West Coast tours focus on America's beautiful national parks, where the grandeur of nature surrounds at every turn. Montana's Glacier National Park is home to glacier-carved mountains and one of the country's most famous roadways, Going-to-the-Sun Road. At Yellowstone National Park, an incredible variety of flora and fauna sit aside waterfalls and deep canyons. Yellowstone's true claim to fame, though, is its geothermal activity that presents in its hot springs and geysers. Your tour itinerary may take you to Mt. Rushmore, which showcases the visages of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, or to South Dakota's Badlands, where colorful rock formations highlight the dry terrain.

Some train tours to the Pacific Northwest feature Seattle, the crown jewel of the region. While this city is a destination in its own right, it is also ideally located as a launching point for Alaska cruise vacations and Western Canada rail tours. Whether you travel from the East Coast to the West Coast or focus your family vacation on the Wild West solely, there is no shortage of trip ideas to explore.

“Booking the trip was easy and fast with Ryan's assistance. The trip itself was wonderfully organized, with Joan our Tour Director keeping us well informed throughout the trip. Hotels were great, food was delicious, and Dale our bus driver was wonderful. I'd do this tour again. The step-on guides for Yellowstone and the Black Hills added a lot of great information. The only change I would make would be to take a bedroom instead of a roomette if traveling with two people. The roomette was good during the day but extremely cozy at night.

“Vacations by Rail was great to deal with. Our travel advisor was Suzanne who was both personable & knowledgeable. Our issues were not with Vacations, but rather with Amtrak. We did 2 trips back to back, which included hotel stays. The hotels were high end & wonderful. We would not hesitate to deal with V by R again, & have already recommended them.

“My wife and I had seen many of our national parks, but had never been to the northwest. We took a trip in September sponsored by Vacations By Rail to Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Canyonlands, and Arches. We met the remainder of our group (46 in all from various parts of the country) in Chicago along with Jennifer, our guide for the tour. The journey from Chicago to East Glacier, Montana, was long (30 hours), but smooth riding. Our hotel for the next 3 nights was the beautiful Lodge, a very imposing log building built by the Great Western RR in the late 1800s. The scenery was fantastic, especially on our Going to the Sun Road on the famous Red Jammers. We saw lots of game, but no bear or wolves. Our 2 night stay in Yellowstone was equally impressive, especially The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Lots of elk and bison along the way. The Grand Tetons were impressive. If we had to pick our favorite park at this point in the tour, we could not. Each was beautiful in its own way. The highlight of our Tetons portion of the trip was the rafting down the Snake River past the Teton Range. We spent 2 nights in Jackson at The Jackson Lodge, the nicest of our hotels in creature comforts. The highlight of Jackson was our evening at The Bar J Ranch for a chuckwagon dinner (those cowpokes sure do eat well) and country entertainment. A must do evening. I, unfortunately, became ill on our trip to Salt Lake City, and had to return home. I give kudos to Vacations By Rail in arranging such a fantastic trip. They employed a wonderful guide, Jennifer, who was so knowledgeable about every place we went. She and our very capable driver, Glenn, arranged rest stops that were not only spaced just right, but in places that were extremely interesting. One was at a bakery in the middle of nowhere that had the best cinnamon rolls. Another was at a picturesque chapel by the Snake River. Another was next to an elk horn bridge and a candy store. Thank you, Vacations By Rail, for a wonderful trip.
