The staff was great. James was welcoming and informative. However the food wasn’t good so be sure to pack something to eat. (Coffee available and good.)

Sorry this went to spam, just saw it. It was not good. Porter wasn't very nice, bathrooms were disgusting on coach car, refrigeration went out which contaminated food, no meals like package said, pizza brought in at one stop, one meal was even on us at the train depot, and no scenic views due to not being able to sit in the dining car because it was contaminated BUT STAFF could sit there. Train cars were outdated and we got wet going from car to car due to rain. Hotel reservation was a 3rd party booking which made it hard to find our reservation. One was in my name but the other hotel was in my friends name. Very confusing. To many things went wrong on this trip that I will probably never go again. I do have two photos that I couldn't attached. I can email them if you have an email address.

First we met our porter and he was rude and continued throughout the trip. He did apologize as we were leaving the train in New York. Several bathrooms in the coach cars were nasty. They should be cleaned at least once during this trip. The refrigeration in the dining car broke so we did not receive the meals we paid for. Breakfast - sent to cafe car for a muffin and breakfast sandwich. Lunch - pizza was brought in. Dinner - On our own in Albany. Not much there to chose from. We also wanted to sit in the dinning car so we could view the scenery but was told we could not sit there (very rudely). Although, the Amtrak staff could sit there. Since there was not a viewing car on this trip and was told we could not sit in the cafe car, we had to stay in our little roomette the entire time. We missed seeing West Point and all the other landmarks. * Sleeper car passengers are invited to enjoy early boarding and a wine and cheese reception at 7:30 PM when available. We were never notified if this was or was not available to us. Tried to contact Vacations by Rail on Sunday. No one got back to us until Monday, which didn't matter because they did not know. We did find the lounge at the Chicago train station that we could relax in before boarding. We also did not get to board early. The Lake Shore Limited sleeper and dining cars are very old. They need a lot of updating or new cars. They are clean, but could use some updating. Learned a lot on our first Amtrak overnight trip. Will not be doing this again. This type of traveling is not for me. Gwen Freeman from Vacations by Rail did a good job with our reservations and communication. The only issue we had was checking into both hotels. Took time for them to find our reservations. The Chicago reservation was in my friends' name and the New York reservation was in mine. Would have been nice for them both to be in one name. We were told by the New York (Edison) hotel that if the reservation would have been made directly with them and not through a third party, it would have been a faster and easier check in.

Train experience exceptional, but package logistics terrible.
