Even before stepping foot on the train, James was experiencing a memorable introduction with a welcome reception held at a historic five-star hotel in Granada, where he met his fellow passengers and the staff.
On arrival at the station, James caught his first glimpse of the Al Andalus carriages, which have been carefully fashioned from the same cars used by the British royal family in the 1920s.
"The red livery of the train was immediately visible," says James. "The train crew were all lined up waiting on the platform to greet us, and a red carpet led up the steps to the train."
After being escorted to his cabin, James entered his Deluxe Suite.
"It was beautifully designed," recalls James, "with classical furnishings but all modern amenities. There's a little seating area with a writing desk and plenty of space to store your luggage. The mini fridge was restocked daily with complimentary bottled water and soft drinks, and an adjustable air-con system - although you could open the windows if you preferred fresh air.
"The daytime couch converted into a large comfortable bed that faced the large window. It was a very good place to relax and unwind.
"My en suite bathroom had a walk-in shower with a rainfall showerhead, and I was provided with bathrobes, towels, slippers and toiletries.
"Speaking very good English, the multi-lingual staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. They made sure to personally introduce themselves to each guest."
Savoring a gastronomic Andalucían adventure
"The food was top quality. There were generous servings for every course, each paired with a specially selected wine," says James about his culinary experiences.
Al Andalus is about traveling in lavish luxury while discovering the treasures of Andalucía, including its food and drink. Whether enjoyed in grand hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants or in one of the two onboard restaurants, you can indulge while savoring the creations of prestigious chefs that showcase the traditional flavors of Spain.
"Lunch and dinner were extravagant occasions," continues James. "We were served four-course set menus using high-quality local ingredients - and lots of wine!
"The restaurant carriages featured armchairs and couches, with a choice of tables for four or two, while the hotel meals were served at banqueting tables.
"Very attentive staff would be happy to customize the set meals to suit your personal tastes and would always be ready to top up your drinks.
"There was no formal dress code for the tour as it was more about enjoyment and exploring in comfort. However, people generally wore smarter clothes for dinner."
Continental breakfast buffets were prepared fresh each morning with the kitchen team also providing hot à la carte options too, but one of the most enjoyable aspects of luxury rail travel is unwinding after dinner.
With four different lounges and a bar car, there is no shortage of places to relax in the evening aboard Al Andalus.
"The train was very comfortable," says James. "There was a piano bar that provided entertainment on many of the nights, plus a farewell party. Classical music is played during the day to create an elegant atmosphere."
Uncovering iconic Andalucía
Traveling in such luxury, you might not wish to leave Al Andalus! However, with guided tours of Granada, Córdoba and Seville, the wonders of southern Spain were waiting to be discovered.
Accompanied by a member of train staff and a knowledgeable local guide, these trips were optional so you could choose to explore on your own if you wanted - with the train crew happy to provide local recommendations.
"On the excursions, we were split into smaller groups with tours conducted in your preferred language," says James.
"The off-train trips consisted of cultural activities, culinary tours and visits to famous UNESCO World Heritage sites."
From a sherry tasting followed by a horse-dancing performance in Jerez to sampling the region's finest olive oil in Úbeda, the included excursions provide a taste of Andalucían culture. There is also the option to enjoy an authentic flamenco show with a tapas dinner in Seville.
Rolling through rural vistas dotted with olive groves and traditional farmhouses, the tour uncovers many fascinating locales such as the 'White Village' of Ronda and ancient Cádiz. For architecture lovers, marveling at Granada's Alhambra, Córdoba's Mezquita mosque-cathedral, and Seville's Alcázar and Giralda belltower are unforgettable experiences.
"The Alhambra and Generalife Gardens were incredible," enthuses James. "I can see why it's Spain's most popular attraction!"
